The news is good for Cameron Mathison. The Hallmark and Great American Family host and actor shared an update on his health, revealing that he will soon hit the five-year mark of being cancer-free. But what kind of cancer did Cameron Mathison have and how did he recover?
What Kind of Cancer Did Cameron Mathison Have?
On the July 22 episode of the “Sex, Lies, and Spray Tans” podcast, Mathison gave an update on his health and revealed that in September 2024 it will be the 5 year anniversary of him officially being cancer-free.
The actor was diagnosed with renal cell carcinoma, a type of kidney cancer that is more common in men, in 2019. He went on to have kidney surgery and, per ET, his cancer was “the least aggressive form of kidney cancer… [with a] very low rate of reoccurring.”
Mathison shared on the podcast that he insisted on an MRI. “There were certain things that were coming back that didn’t make sense,” he told Cheryl Burke, who hosts the podcast. “And, you know, white blood cell count being one of them and other markers that could potentially be an indicator for cancer. I asked my doctor at the time, I said, listen, you know, I know something’s off, I can feel it, things aren’t functioning the way I’m doing everything right, but I’m not getting the results. And he’s like, ‘no, no, no, you’re fine. Let’s just try this for a while.”

But that didn’t work out. “So, for another two years, I kept going at it and eating well and doing this and doing that and exercises and using all these, you know, hacks and still, and then I’d get another blood test and then the blood numbers were worse. And he was like, all right, yeah, maybe we do need an MRI,” he continued, going on to add that at that point, he pretty much insisted on the MRI, which is how they found the cancer.
After that, Mathison shared, “I had a partial nephrectomy, which means part of my right kidney was taken out.”
For Mathison, his story is still a positive one and he considers himself lucky because his cancer didn’t spread, despite the fact that doctors believe it was growing in his body for about twelve years.
The actor now works with a health coach and tries to focus not just on getting healthy, but on helping others on their health journey. “The way that it’s changed, it’s increased my desire and my willingness and my effort and motivation to help others and to spread the word and just to be a benefit. I got so much help through my journey, and it’s like, not everybody has that,” he told People magazine in 2022.
