England manager Gareth Southgate described Ukraine’s Mykhailo Mudryk as “a very good winger” after coming up against the Chelsea man yesterday evening.

England came from behind to record a 1-1 draw against Ukraine in a European Championship qualifying match.

There was a host of Premier League stars on display for both teams, including Mykhailo Mudryk.

The 22-year-old attacker tried his best to impact the game from the left wing for Ukraine, but he did run into a brick wall with England right-back Kyle Walker.

Speaking in his post-match press conference, Southgate did give a small four-word mention of Mudryk during his assessment of Walker.

“He (Walker) showed really important defensive qualities, his cover of a very good winger,” Southgate said, as quoted by England’s official website.

In our view, Mudryk’s performance for his country on Saturday was another reminder of just how raw he is right now as a player.

It was great to see the Chelsea forward starting a match and he did provide an outlet for Ukraine on the counter-attack.

Unfortunately, the left-winger did come unstuck whenever he went 1v1 against Walker. In fairness, the Man City and England star is one of the best 1v1 defenders in the world right now.

Chelsea fans may still hold out hope that Mudryk will grow and improve as a player. John Terry recently claimed he believes in the Chelsea youngster, as quoted by Simon Phillips on X.

It would be great for him to get some frequent start for club and country during the past couple of months rather than small cameo performancs.
