Despite the monumentally positive outcomes in Kazakhstan’s North Aral, the southern basin, governed by Uzbekistan, tells a bleaker tale. It remains a barren salt flat, transformed into an industrial zone with natural gas drilling replacing water.

While Kazakhstan committed resources and engineering to save the North Aral, Uzbekistan’s policies perpetuate the drying of the southern sea. Modernizations include lining canals to prevent water loss, installing automated flow monitoring, and subsidizing advanced irrigation methods. Integrated management is key to the ongoing revival.
