Adam Scott casts doubt over PGA Tour’s LIV Golf deal and opening up on ‘divide’

Adam Scott had admitted that there has been little progress in the ongoing negotiations between the PGA Tour and the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia (PIF).

The PGA Tour has been in ongoing talks with its Saudi counterparts since announcing a framework agreement in 2023, in the hopes of bringing its dispute with LIV Golf to an end. Scott has been at the center of negotiations, representing the Tour’s playing membership alongside Tiger Woods.

He was even invited by Donald Trump to the White House earlier this year, with the President of the United States intervening to help talks between the two sides.

Since then, though, there have been limited developments, with Scott revealing this week that there is little to report.

“There’s really been no developments since earlier this year. So, I would say, don’t hold your breath,” he said, per FOX Sports.

“I think it’s pretty clear that the guys who stayed at the PGA Tour made a choice to play, let’s say, PGA Tour-style golf, and most of them probably would have had the opportunity to play LIV-style golf.

“So, they’ve made their choices and there’s kind of a divide in what people want to do.”

As part of negotiations, PIF has looked to invest in PGA Tour Enterprises, casting some doubt as to what the future may hold for those on the LIV setup. In recent weeks, though, the breakaway circuit has shown signs that they are going nowhere.

LIV has announced its intentions to return to Adelaide until at least 2031. Last week, the league also confirmed its UK event will be back at JCB Golf and Country Club next year and announced it had signed a “multi-year” deal to host events in South Africa starting in 2026.

Elsewhere, a report from Sports Business Journal claimed that the league’s tournament purses will increase from $25 million to $30 million next season.

LIV CEO, Scott O’Neil, appeared in front of the media at LIV UK last week and was bullish about the circuit’s future.

“I will tell you, the future is really bright, and I can’t be anymore excited for what’s coming,” O’Neil commented.

“You’ve seen us move from ‘golf but louder’, to ‘long LIV Golf,’ which is more than just a tag line; it’s actually how we see ourselves as part of this golf ecosystem.

“To that end, you’ve seen pretty good strides. We’ve had open pathways to two of the majors this year, between the U.S. Open and the Open Championship, which is really gracious of those two leaders, Mark Darbon and MikeWhan, and I think you’ll continue to see progress there.”
