Charlie Woods caught fire with a sensational six-under second round to catapult himself into contention at the Junior PGA Championship.
Woods has followed in his legendary father’s footsteps into the game, recently completing at the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship but struggling. The iconic tournament is an event that Tiger won three times.
However, Woods’ attempts to follow in his father’s footsteps ended in disaster as he missed the cut by some margin. After a horrific opening round of 81 left him at 11 over, he fared better in his second round, posting a three-over 74 at Trinity Forest Golf Club in Texas – but he’s turned around his form.
Woods perfectly began his Junior PGA Challenge with a strong opening round. On Tuesday, Woods tallied two birdies in the first six holes before suffering a bogey on the eighth.
The teenager hit back with another birdie on the par-four ninth to hit the turn at a two-under 34. However, after a fourth birdie on the 11th, Woods suffered a pair of bogeys to close out at just one-under.
While the round displayed consistent fairway hitting, the 16-year-old, who started the second round in 43rd, spectacularly hit back on Wednesday at Kampen-Cosler in West Lafayette, Indiana.
Woods caught fire in his second round. He tallied a sensational six birdies with a single bogey in his first nine holes, before posting another three birdies down the stretch, only to drop off with back-to-back bogeys on the 16th and 17th.
Woods entered the clubhouse with a sensational six-under 66. He will need another impressive two rounds if he is to contend; Lunden Esterline has the lead at 14-under after posting an impressive 10-under second round.

Woods didn’t face the media after his first round. Long-time Tiger supporter and Birck Boilermaker club member Joe Couch sang the teenager’s praises.
Per the IndyStar, he said: “Tiger was the reason why I played golf, and it’s a cool experience to see everything and see Charlie play. It’s surreal watching Charlie play at a course I play at every day.
“There’s a couple of shots I think he’d want back but I also feel like he’s playing well. He’s handling his emotions and there was a lot of commotion but I thought he was playing well.”
Aside from his struggle in the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship, where he missed the cut, Woods has shown flashes of his potential. In May, he won his first American Junior Golf Association tournament at the Team TaylorMade Invitational in Florida.
He carded a six-under final round of 66 to win the tournament on 15-under at Streamsong Resort’s Black Course in Bowling Green. Woods finished three shots clear of Phillip Dunham, Willie Gordon, and Luke Colton.
