Shakira’s many millions often go to good causes, but just what fraction of her cash helps the less fortunate?

Shakira has been a force in the music industry for so long that some people can’t even remember (or weren’t around!) when she first became relevant as an artist. But it’s been a long road for the singer, who hails from Colombia, and she’s worked hard to get where she is today.

In a heartwarming twist, however, Shakira doesn’t seem to be into buying private islands or wearing designer duds and bling. With her millionaire status, Shakira opts to effect change in the world, a few hundred thousand at a time.

Does Shakira Spend Too Much Of Her Money? Some fans are already a bit critical of how much cash Shakira spends. Like other high profile (and rich) celebrities, the singer owns multiple mansions, expensive cars, and flies on private planes. The intriguing thing about Shakira is that the same way she tosses cash at her homes and vehicles, she also freely shares her cash with others.

Though she’s raising two 𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥ren with her partner, Gerard Pique, Shakira makes time (and extra funds) for kids all over the world.

What Does Shakira Advocate For? Shakira has a long list of philanthropic causes she’s passionate about. In fact, she’s so involved in charity work that her website has a section dedicated to listing out her charitable interests. Those include education and early 𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥hood development, with various focuses like health and nutrition of preschool 𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥ren and educational success initiatives for Hispanic students.

In short, Shakira cares about 𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥ren and primarily tries to support healthy growth so kids can thrive. And, she even has her own foundation with an impressive origin story.

What Does Shakira’s Foundation Do? The Pies Descalzos Foundation was Shakira’s brain𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥 at the young age of 18. By that time, of course, Shakira was already working her way up the music charts in Colombia and beyond. But she slowed down a bit to start a foundation to offer 𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥ren and their families more opportunities.

The foundation provides education and nutrition to kids in Colombia.

Beyond that, Shakira is also one of Unicef’s Goodwill Ambassadors, which also focuses on schooling and resources for 𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥ren’s education worldwide.

Who Funds Shakira’s Foundation? Since Shakira launched her own foundation, it’s evident that she had the cash to make moves. But the foundation’s Wikipedia page also notes that in addition to Shakira’s contributions, the organization also receives donations from “national and international companies who care about social responsibility.”

There’s also the fact that Shakira has “formed alliances” with both government agencies and “multilateral corporations.” In layperson speak? Shakira negotiates donations for her foundation (and other causes) based on her fame.

For example, Shakira netted $660K for her foundation by agreeing to appear in a commercial for Freixenet. The deal also included the production of a documentary (and a music video) about the foundation.

When it comes to putting her money where her mouth is, though, what does Shakira’s charitable write-off come out to?

How Much Of Shakira’s Money Goes To Charity? With a current net worth of around $350 million (depending on who you ask, and when they calculated the figure), Shakira could definitely stand to throw some money around on mansions and Ferraris. But how much of her money does she invest in the causes that are close to her heart?

Various donations over the years were large enough to make headlines, so there are a few ways fans can figure out how much Shakira shares her wealth. In fact, all the way back in 2007, the singer donated a staggering $45 million for rebuilding communities after earthquakes ravaged Peru and a hurricane destroyed homes in Nicaragua.

That same article also detailed a $5 million donation that Shakira handed over to help 𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥ren “who live in poverty.” In 2010, the songstress then received an actual medal from the U.N. for “her work to help impoverished 𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥ren.”

More recently, during the pandemic, Shakira donated thousands of masks and even ventilators to her hometown in Colombia. The mayor of Barranquilla even posted on Twitter when Shakira gifted the town the vital resources, calling her one of the most loved people from Barranquilla and in the world.

It’s not the first time that Shakira has sent love (and goods) back home to Colombia, though. She also donated the harmonica from her ‘Gypsy’ music video so that it could be auctioned off for charity to benefit the Colombian Red Cross. (that was a different music video than the one that featured geometry)

Her rise to fame may have been an impressive feat, but Shakira’s not done making an impact on the world just yet, and she’s got plenty more to give.
