Phil Hartman, the comedian and actor known for his work on Saturday Night Live and The Simpsons, was fatally shot by his wife at their home in Southern California on May 28th, 1998. The younger child, Birgen, was found asleep in her bedroom after officers forced their way in. Phil’s older son from a previous relationship, who was in his twenties, was notified later that morning. The marriage had been troubled for years. Friends and family members said Brynn, a former model, was jealous of Phil’s success and had struggled with drug and alcohol addiction.
She had been in rehab at least twice. Phil had reportedly told close friends that he wanted to end the marriage but feared he would lose custody of the children. He had also spoken about retiring from acting to try to save the relationship, but those close to him said he was deeply unhappy. During that time he met Paul Reubens, and together they created the character Pee-wee Herman.
Hartman played Captain Carl on Pee-wee’s Playhouse and co-wrote the script for the 1985 film Pee-wee’s Big Adventure. He left that project after a creative dispute with Reubens. Hartman joined Saturday Night Live in 1986 and stayed for eight seasons. He was known for more than 70 impressions, including Frank Sinatra, Ronald Reagan, Ed McMahon, Barbara Bush, and his most famous one, Bill Clinton.
He also created original characters such as Eugene, the anal-retentive chef. In 1989 he won a Primetime Emmy as part of the show’s writing staff. He later voiced dozens of recurring characters on The Simpsons across 52 episodes, including washed-up actor Troy McClure and lawyer Lionel Hutz. From 1995 until his death, he starred on the NBC sitcom NewsRadio as Bill McNeal, a pompous but beloved news anchor.
He married Brenn Omdal in November 1987. They had two children together. It was his second marriage, after his first, of three years, ended in divorce. Brynn’s erratic behavior had escalated in the months before the shooting.
She had reportedly sent a threatening letter to Phil’s first wife, warning her not to contact him. Phil had repeatedly removed the children from the house during her outbursts, taking them to stay with friends or family. On May 27th, 1998, the couple argued. Phil went to bed.
Hours later, Brynn entered the bedroom and shot him three times—once between the eyes, once inthe throat, and once inthe chest. She then fled toa friend’s home, confessed, and later returned tothe house, where she took her own life. NewsRadio continued for two more seasons before ending in1999. His voice work on The Simpsons stopped abruptly; the show paid tribute to him in an episode aired later that year. His children were raised by relatives and have largely stayed out of public life. Brynn’s brief note, discovered after her death, reportedly read: “Phil, you’re so perfect.
