Archaeologists have documented that early humans regularly scavenged the kills of large predators for hundreds of thousands of years before they became skilled hunters. Tool-marked bones from ancient sites show that our ancestors waited until lions and hyenas had finished feeding, then used sharp stones to crack open skulls and long bones for the calorie-rich marrow and brains inside. Researchers believe this high-fat diet played a key role in the development of the human brain. Over time, some groups became bold enough to drive predators off fresh kills using rocks, noise, and fire, a tactic scientists call power scavenging.

Sleep patterns among ancient humans also served as a survival mechanism. Motion-tracking studies of the Hadza people in Tanzania, modern hunter-gatherers, revealed that a camp of more than 20 adults was fully asleep at the same time for only 18 minutes over a 20-day period spanning more than 200 hours of night. Researchers attribute this to the sentinel hypothesis, which suggests that natural variations in sleep timing kept someone awake or half-awake at all times. Teenagers stayed up late, older adults woke early and slept in fragments, and light sleepers reacted to every sound.
This constant vigilance made it difficult for predators to approach unnoticed, and keeping the fire burning was considered essential because the light and heat formed a protective barrier around the camp. When survival required moving on, some groups faced brutal decisions. In harsh winters, carrying an injured or elderly person could slow the entire band and threaten everyone. Arctic oral traditions describe elders voluntarily walking out into the snow so that their grandchildren could eat.
However, evidence also shows that ancient humans sometimes went to great lengths to care for the disabled. The remains of a Neanderthal known as Shanidar 1, found in Iraq, show that he survived for decades with a withered arm, blindness in one eye, and other severe injuries, indicating his group fed, carried, and protected him for years. Difficult choices also involved the young. Anthropologists studying traditional hunter-gatherer societies documented that mothers facing famine, twins, or an older child who still needed carrying sometimes did not keep a newborn, because there was not enough food or milk to sustain both infants.
The decision was described as a rationing of love rather than a lack of it. Archaeological evidence shows that infants who died were often buried with exceptional care, including beads, ochre, and other treasures. At one Ice Age burial site in Austria, twin newborns were laid under a mammoth shoulder blade, wrapped in red ochre, and covered with ivory beads that would have taken hundreds of hours to create. Evidence of cannibalism among prehistoric humans has been found at multiple sites.
At Gough’s Cave in England, excavators in 1987 discovered human bones dating back nearly 15,000 years that carried cut marks identical to those found on animal bones processed for food. Long bones had been cracked open for marrow, and three human skulls had been carefully shaped into drinking cups. Similar findings at Gran Dolina in Spain, dating back about 800,000 years, include butchered remains of early humans, many of them children. At El Sidrón Cave, the remains of 12 Neanderthals appear to have been processed like game animals.
Researchers believe some cases resulted from starvation, while the crafted skull cups suggest that in certain groups, consuming the dead may have been a ritual act meant to keep loved ones close. When food was extremely scarce, ancient humans turned to unusual sources of nutrition. Some ate specific clays, a practice called geophagy, which binds to plant toxins and allowed people to safely consume bitter roots and tubers. Arctic peoples fermented fish and meat by burying them for weeks, a process that pre-digested the food and unlocked nutrients.
People also boiled old bones for bone grease, cooked bark and boiled leather, and consumed animal blood by nicking a vein on a living animal. Some researchers believe the highly acidic human stomach may have evolved because of a long history of eating carcasses. Persistence hunting was another method that relied on human endurance. Instead of ambushing prey, hunters chased antelope through midday heat for hours until the animals collapsed from heatstroke.
Humans are the only predators on Earth capable of sweating while running, which allowed them to outlast faster prey. The survival strategies of ancient humans were extreme, and many are disturbing by modern standards. Yet archaeologists point out that nearly all of them worked. The chain of people who made these difficult choices over hundreds of thousands of years led directly to modern humans.
Researchers note that the instincts and physical tools developed during that time are still present, from light sleeping patterns to strong cravings for fat. The line between civilization and the Stone Age, they argue, is not morality but the availability of food.
