As the disappearance of Lily and Jack Sullivan continues to haunt Nova Scotia, their stepfather, Daniel Martell, has now appeared in court on serious charges involving an adult complainant.
Martell, 34, made a brief appearance at Pictou Provincial Court, where he faces charges of sexual assault, assault, and forcible confinement.
The identity of the complainant is protected by a publication ban.
The charges are separate from the disappearance of Lily and Jack, and the court appearance did not establish any legal connection between the two matters.
Still, with the children missing since May, every development involving someone from their household is being watched closely.
During the hearing, Crown lawyer Bill Gorman indicated that Martell is expected to return to court to address legal representation through Nova Scotia Legal Aid, along with issues involving election and plea.
His next appearance was scheduled for March 30.
The hearing itself was brief.
