A 4,500-year-old board game, inlaid with shell and lapis lazuli, was buried with its owner in the Royal Cemetery of Ur. When British archaeologist Leonard Woolley excavated it in the 1920s, he recovered a game that still exists today in the British Museum. The fact that someone chose to be buried with it rather than with food or weapons shows how deeply games mattered to ancient people—but the history of games begins much earlier and far differently than entertainment. The oldest dice ever identified are not cubes.

They are two-sided bone and wood objects found at 57 sites across Wyoming, Colorado, and New Mexico, dating to roughly 12,000 to 12,800 years ago. Published in the journal American Antiquity in 2026 by Robert J. Madden of Colorado State University, these more than 600 artifacts predate agriculture. But they were not toys.
They were tools for divination. Before dice were used for gambling, priests threw astragali, the ankle bones of sheep or goats, to read the will of the gods. Some of these bones were drilled and filled with lead to change the odds; others were inscribed with the names of Greek deities like Hera and Aphrodite. The practice, called cleromancy, involved consulting a reference manual called a pinax to announce divine decisions.
At some unknown point, the prayer became a bet—and the sacred became secular. The oldest board game that can be confidently identified is Senet, which appears in Egyptian tomb deposits as early as 3500 BC. The most famous board was found in Tutankhamun’s tomb by Howard Carter, made of ebony inlaid with ivory with a drawer for pieces. Fascinatingly, Senet changed over time.
Early versions were secular races, but by the New Kingdom, roughly 1570 to 1070 BC, the board became a map of the afterlife, with squares representing trials from the Book of the Dead. The game that started as entertainment became a way to negotiate with death. The Royal Game of Ur, dated to around 2600 BC, is the oldest game with a nearly complete reconstructed set of rules. For decades, those rules were lost.
Then Irving Finkel, a British Museum curator, found a cuneiform tablet from 177 BC describing the game. Written by a Babylonian scribe named Iddin-Marduk-balatu, it described a two-player race using tetrahedral dice and rosette squares that granted safety or extra turns. The fact that someone wrote down the rules of a board game—not a law or a prayer—shows how much it mattered. Games also traveled across civilizations.
Floods along the Halil River in southeastern Iran in 2001 exposed cemeteries from the Jiroft civilization, where archaeologists recovered carved chlorite game boards dating to the 3rd millennium BC. At Shahr-e Sukhteh, the “burnt city,” a complete set with 27 pieces and four dice was excavated in 1977. These finds show a Bronze Age gaming network connecting Persia, Mesopotamia, and the Indus Valley. People separated by thousands of kilometers played the same games, trading them like pottery—except games were not needed for survival, only for fun.
Not every ancient game used a board. In Mesoamerica, the ball game played by the Maya and Aztec lasted over 3,000 years. The oldest known courts date to 1600–1400 BC at Paso de la Amada in Chiapas, Mexico. Players struck a heavy rubber ball with their hips and forearms on narrow courts with sloping walls.
Stone reliefs at Chichen Itza depict the decapitation of players after matches. The game represented cosmic struggle and was sometimes used as a substitute for war. Rather than sending armies, rival cities sent teams, with the rules replacing the chaos of combat with something structured and witnessed. Strategy games took longer to develop.
Go, called Wei qi in Chinese, is estimated to be 2,500 to 4,000 years old. Legend attributes its invention to the mythical Emperor Yao, who supposedly created it to discipline his son. The earliest verified textual reference appears in the Zuo Zhuan, a Chinese chronicle, around 548 BC. Originally played on a 17 by 17 grid, it expanded to 19 by 19 during the Tang Dynasty.
The number of possible board positions in Go exceeds the number of atoms in the observable universe. It was considered one of the four essential arts of the Chinese scholarly gentleman. Chess began as chaturanga in northern India around the 6th century AD, with pieces representing the four divisions of the Indian army: infantry, cavalry, elephants, and chariots. It spread to Persia as Shatranj, then followed Islam across North Africa and into Europe.
The queen became the most powerful piece in Spain around the late 15th century, likely influenced by the reign of Isabella I of Castile. Meanwhile, Vikings played Hnefatafl, an asymmetrical game where a king tries to escape to a corner. Boards have been found in a 9th-century Norwegian ship burial at Gokstad, and over 300 gaming pieces were found at a Viking Great Army winter camp at Torksey, England, dating to 872–873 AD. When chess reached Scandinavia, it displaced Hnefatafl entirely—not because it was more fun, but because it came attached to a more powerful culture.
The Greeks played Petteia, which Plato referenced in the Republic. The Romans played Tabula, the ancestor of backgammon; Emperor Claudius was so obsessed that he had a board mounted in his chariot and wrote a book about the game. At Pompeii, preserved from 79 AD, archaeologists found loaded dice, gambling graffiti, and wall paintings of players arguing over bets. Roman law banned dice gambling except during the Saturnalia festival, but nobody cared.
Playing cards emerged in Tang Dynasty China around the 9th century AD. They traveled the Silk Road to the Islamic world, where the Mamluk Sultanate refined them into four-suited decks. The first confirmed record of cards in Europe dates to 1377, eventually producing the standard 52-card deck. Gambling with those cards accidentally created modern mathematics.
In 1654, a French gambler, the Chevalier de Méré, asked Blaise Pascal how to fairly divide stakes in an unfinished dice game. Pascal wrote to Pierre de Fermat, and their correspondence created probability theory—the foundation of insurance, statistics, and quantum mechanics. It was invented because a gambler wanted to know what he was owed. In 1944, John von Neumann and Oskar Morgenstern published Theory of Games and Economic Behavior, founding game theory, which became central to economics, political science, and military strategy.
Children playing strategy games on dirt floors were running the same calculations centuries earlier, they just did not call it mathematics. The modern game industry has its own complicated history. In 1903, Elizabeth Magie patented The Landlord’s Game, designed to demonstrate how monopolies concentrate wealth. It had two sets of rules, one showing how monopolies destroy and one showing how shared wealth could benefit everyone.
The game spread for decades through Quaker communities and universities. In 1935, Charles Darrow sold his version to Parker Brothers as Monopoly, claiming it as his own invention. Magie received $500 and no royalties. The world’s most popular board game, about the injustice of monopolies, was itself taken by a monopolist.
The gaming industry has grown into a global force. The first official gambling house, Il Ridotto, opened in Venice in 1638. Casino gambling was legalized in Nevada in 1931. In 1958, physicist William Higinbotham created Tennis for Two at Brookhaven National Laboratory.
In 1972, Atari’s Pong became the first commercially successful video game. Nintendo, founded in Kyoto in 1889 to make hanafuda playing cards, revived the global industry with the NES in 1985. Today, the video game industry generates an estimated $180 to $190 billion annually with roughly 3. 3 billion gamers worldwide—more than five times the size of the global film industry.
Games have also become the benchmark for artificial intelligence. On May 11, 1997, IBM’s Deep Blue defeated world chess champion Garry Kasparov by brute computational force. On March 15, 2016, Google DeepMind’s AlphaGo defeated Lee Sedol, one of the greatest Go players in history, four games to one. AlphaGo used deep learning, and in game two it made a move, move 37, that no human player would have made.
Commentators were stunned; Lee Sedol left the room. The machine playing a game invented to teach discipline produced a move human masters called beautiful. Humans invented games to practice thinking, then built machines to practice thinking, then tested those machines with the same games—and the machines thought in ways humans never had. Sport followed a similar path of codification.
Before 1863, football had no unified rules. On October 26, 1863, representatives met at the Freemasons’ Tavern in London and founded the Football Association, approving formal laws that banned carrying the ball and kicking opponents in the shins. What the FA invented was not football but agreement—a single set of rules that allowed strangers to play each other. That codification, the moment informal games become formalized systems, is what happened to Senet, Ur, chess, and Go.
Someone wrote the rules down, and the game became immortal. Games emerged independently on every inhabited continent over tens of thousands of years because the impulse to play is not cultural; it is biological. Children invent games without being taught. Crows invent games without being mammals.
What humans added was structure: boards, dice, fields, and screens. Those systems were first inseparable from religion, then became social technology, intellectual training, mathematics, entertainment, industry, and the benchmark for artificial intelligence. Every human culture ever studied has games, with no known exception. The convergence is total.
Games are not an invention like glass or the sword; they are an expression of how the human brain works.
