Why Ancient Humans Ate Dirt?

Long before humans mastered fire, cooked food, or shaped stone into weapons, they were deliberately eating earth. Archaeological evidence from Kalambo Falls, on the border of Zambia and Tanzania, places geophagy—the intentional consumption of soil and clay—in the human record at least 2 million years ago, attributed to Homo habilis. British archaeologist John Desmond Clark documented that Homo habilis mined clays from below the topsoil for consumption. This makes eating earth one of the earliest deliberate, generationally transmitted behaviors in human history, predating controlled fire and cooking.

Geophagy has never been a random act. Cultures that practice it select specific soils from specific deposits, often pale white or gray and fine-grained, passed down through generations. The practice was documented by Hippocrates in the 4th century BCE, and Pliny recommended red clay for ulcers and diarrhea. In the 18th century, the Sultan of Turkey consumed clay imported from Lemnos, a practice Europeans adopted as a health remedy.

For most of recorded history, the medical establishment accepted eating specific earths. Only when medicine became laboratory-focused was the practice reclassified as a disorder. Scientists have since identified three simultaneous reasons for the behavior. The first is mineral deficiency.

Clay provides calcium carbonate, copper, iron, and zinc. Cornell researcher Sera Young, publishing in the Quarterly Review of Biology, found that 30 to 60% of pregnant women across cultures consume soil. The developing fetus draws significant calcium from the mother’s skeleton, and her body seeks concentrated mineral sources. Young documented a pregnant woman in rural Tanzania who ate earth from her house wall twice daily.

The second reason is toxin protection. Before refrigeration, clay helped neutralize harmful compounds in bitter plants and moldy stored grain. Both the Pomo people of California and villagers in Sardinia mixed clay with toxic plant foods during preparation. Certain clay minerals form stable complexes with aflatoxins in the gastrointestinal tract, carrying them out before absorption.

The third reason involves parasite suppression. Hookworms, roundworms, and whipworms were widespread throughout human prehistory. A clay-coated gut creates a hostile environment for organisms trying to anchor to the intestinal wall. Geophagy appears most often among pregnant women and children in tropical areas with high pathogen densities.

This instinct is not unique to humans. East African chimpanzees eat clay for protection from plant compounds, and Amazon macaws gather at exposed riverbanks daily to consume clay before eating anything else. The behavior persisted because it worked. The practice survives today.

Kaolin clays are sold throughout the American South as white dirt and Mississippi mud, with regular buyers describing the taste as similar to fresh rain. Convenience store owners restock weekly, and primary buyers are pregnant women who continue the tradition because their mothers did. Not all clay is safe. Lead, arsenic, and other heavy metals concentrate in specific soils, and eating random earth is not the same as consuming carefully selected mineral clay.

Ancestors passed down knowledge of safe deposits through generations of trial and consequence. Modern iron supplements were invented in the 1930s. The clay deposits humans have used have existed for millions of years, representing one of the most sophisticated pharmaceutical instincts in the animal kingdom.
