Reds maintain run, milestone West Ham win and Salah’s record

Liverpool secured a milestone victory over West Ham United at Anfield on Sunday afternoon in the Premier League with a 3-1 win.

The Reds continued their unbeaten start to the season with three more points on home soil, thanks to goals from Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nunez and Diogo Jota.

Here are five talking points from the contest…

Klopp’s run continues

Liverpool made it 17 games without defeat in the Premier League with the victory over David Moyes’ men.

The run, which dates back to last season, is the best currently ongoing in the division, with the Reds having posted five victories and one draw from their opening six domestic fixtures in 2023-24.

Those five wins have also all been in a row in recent weeks.

A landmark win over the Hammers

Liverpool recorded a 50th win over West Ham at Anfield across all competitions on their 72nd meeting with the Hammers in L4.

In the Premier League era, the Reds have now won 35 of the 55 encounters between the teams.

Liverpool also equalled their club record versus West Ham by scoring in a 15th league encounter in a row – a feat also achieved from 1977 to 1987.

Salah makes it 12 in a row

Salah’s converted penalty kick saw the Reds open the scoring and the No.11 maintain his streak of goal involvements in the Premier League.

The Egyptian has now scored or assisted in his last 12 top-flight games, matching the feat of Stan Collymore (1995), Jamie Vardy (2015) and himself in 2021.

He also became the fifth player to score or assist in each of his team’s first six Premier League games of the season – alongside David Beckham, Thierry Henry, Sergio Aguero and Erling Haaland.

Salah moved onto 10 goals against West Ham as a Liverpool player too, hauling himself level with John Toshack for the most strikes past the Hammers for the Reds.

Nunez’s form continues

Nunez, meanwhile, continued his own strong start to the season.

The No.9 has now returned four goals and two assists in his seven appearances across all competitions this campaign.

Nunez’s clever finish put Liverpool back in front after West Ham had earlier levelled ahead of the half-time break.

He also played a key role in helping Salah open the scoring, as his pass found his teammate before winning a first-half penalty.

Klopp’s celebration

The Reds have overcome every test they have faced so far this season barring the opening-day draw at Chelsea.

Having made a recent habit of coming from behind, Liverpool took the lead against West Ham and were forced to battle from in front.

Klopp’s visible joy at full-time was clear for all to see as his side’s hot streak carried on, with the famed fist pumps returning in front of the Kop to a huge Anfield roar.

Another obstacle passed for the boss and his squad, who will now turn their attention to the Carabao Cup tie against Leicester City back at home on Wednesday evening.
