Phil Mickelson is a misunderstood figure in the golf world, according to Bryson DeChambeau, who has got to know the veteran at the Ryder Cup and in LIV Golf
Bryson DeChambeau has given a glowing review of Phil Mickelson
Bryson DeChambeau says he hopes other golfers get to see the side of Phil Mickelson that he has grown to know and love.
The two LIV Golf rebels, both major multiple-time winners, have been close for several years, with DeChambeau one of USA’s stars in the 2021 Ryder Cup 19-9 storming over Team Europe, as the 30-year-old was mentored by Mickelson. The duo now compete on the Saudi-backed LIV Golf tour and the respect is mutual.
DeChambeau has praised Mickelson’s love for the sport and his dedication to trying to bring more people towards golf. “Just how much he cares about the game, how much he cares about getting people into the game,” DeChambeau told Golf.com when asked for something he has realized about the veteran.
“He’s an entertainer and cares so much. I wish people could see that,” he continued. Mickelson has been equally as gushing about DeChambeau, especially after his career-second U.S. Open win, as he triumphed over Rory McIlroy, who hasn’t won a major in a decade.
“I think Bryson is the most charismatic and fun player to watch in the game today,” Mickelson said at the time. “He comes at the game in such a different way.
“He’s exciting because he hits it so far, but he’s also exciting because he connects with the fans and he has this great energy and I’ve always seen this in him and enjoyed being around him.”
Mickelson, despite being over two decades DeChambeau’s senior, and four majors ahead, admitted he has learned a lot from his younger competitor. “I learn a lot when I’m with him,” Mickelson admitted. “So watching him play and come down the stretch and seeing the way he attacked that golf course and dominated it was really impressive.”

DeChambeau is also immersing himself in the digital world and spreading golf to a younger audience through social media and YouTube. He has over 1.4 million YouTube subscribers, with his Break 50 challenge alongside former President, Donald Trump, amassing millions of views.
“I always knew there was an audience for it. Look at Dude Perfect and the success they have had,” DeChambeau said. “I just slapped myself on the head and said that’s what I need to do. That’s what the kids are watching these days, and that’s how you interact with them. The first one I ever did got 800,000 views, and it’s just grown from there.”
“To date, we have 11.7 million views on the Trump video. The John Daly video we just released has had 4.4 million views. It’s just incredible,” he added.
