For years, Hollywood insiders warned Ted Lange about one legendary name—Gene Kelly. Crew members described the iconic dancer and filmmaker as distant, intimidating, and nearly impossible to approach. But when the two finally met, Lange discovered a very different man, proving that some of Hollywood’s biggest reputations don’t always tell the whole story.
Before becoming beloved by millions as Isaac Washington on The Love Boat, Ted Lange had already built a strong foundation as a performer. Born in Oakland, California, in 1948, he grew up in a family that encouraged creativity. After studying theater at Merritt Junior College and San Francisco City College, he continued developing his craft on Broadway before making the transition to television.
When The Love Boat premiered in 1977, Lange quickly became one of its most recognizable faces. Yet behind the cheerful bartender audiences adored, he faced challenges that viewers rarely saw. As the show’s only Black regular cast member, Lange often pushed producers to give his character richer storylines instead of limiting him to the background. With support from castmates such as Fred Grandy and Bernie Kopell, he successfully fought for more meaningful representation and greater creative opportunities.
His ambitions also extended far beyond acting. Over the years, Lange established himself as an accomplished director, playwright, and producer, writing 17 stage plays, including George Washington’s Boy, while directing episodes of popular television series such as Moesha and Dharma & Greg.
One of the most memorable moments of his career came during a guest appearance by Gene Kelly on The Love Boat.
Before filming, crew members repeatedly warned Lange that Kelly had a reputation for being gruff and unapproachable. Many advised him to keep his distance. Rather than relying on secondhand opinions, Lange decided to introduce himself personally.
Instead of asking for an autograph or talking about Kelly’s legendary musicals, Lange asked a thoughtful question about Gene Kelly’s collaboration with the Nicholas Brothers, the groundbreaking tap-dancing duo whose influence on American entertainment remains enormous.
