In their ongoing search for a potential successor to Erik ten Hag, Manchester United’s board has set its sights on Sporting Lisbon’s rising managerial star, Ruben Amorim.
After retiring early from professional football, Amorim quickly transitioned into coaching, gaining valuable experience at Casa Pia and Braga before taking over at Sporting Lisbon in 2020. Since then, he has transformed Sporting into a dominant force in Portuguese football, rivalling heavyweights Benfica and FC Porto.
Under Amorim’s leadership, Sporting Lisbon has adopted a dynamic attacking style that has set records this season. In the 2024/25 campaign, Sporting achieved an impressive streak, winning eight consecutive domestic league matches, scoring 27 goals, and conceding just two. This performance marks them as a team to be reckoned with and highlights Amorim’s managerial brilliance.
Amorim, known for his talent in developing young players, has nurtured rising stars such as Geny Catamo, Eduardo Quaresma, Conrad Harder, and Geovany Quenda, all of whom have thrived under his guidance. He is often compared to other young managerial talents like Thiago Motta and Julian Nagelsmann.
Amorim has already guided Sporting to two league titles, in the 2020/21 and 2023/24 seasons. If Sporting continues its current form, there is a strong possibility that they will defend their title successfully this season.
Although Manchester United has not yet finalized their decision on Erik ten Hag’s future, the INEOS group is reportedly giving the Dutchman more time, with upcoming fixtures against Brentford and Fenerbahce after the FIFA international break potentially determining his fate. As United closely monitors Amorim’s progress, he could soon be the man tasked with leading the Red Devils back to glory.
