Max Verstappen was finally able to have some fun at the expense of the British media following his stunning performance in the São Paulo Grand Prix.

From 17th on the Interlagos grid, Verstappen delivered arguably the drive of his F1 career to take the chequered flag for the 62nd time and become only the sixth driver in 1121 grands prix to triumph from that position or lower.

It also ended a run of 10 races without a win to leave the Red Bull driver with one hand firmly on his fourth consecutive drivers’ title as he holds a 62-point lead over McLaren’s Lando Norris with only 86 to play for.

And after the criticism from the British media that followed his driving standards in the last two grands prix, notably the Mexico City race in which he was handed two 10-second penalties for incidents with Norris, Verstappen thought he would have some fun.

In the post-race press conference in São Paulo, where he was joined by Alpine duo Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly, second and third respectively, and after taking a range of questions from the assembled media, Verstappen glanced around the room.

“I have a quick question here,” he said. “I mean, I appreciate all of you being here, but I don’t see any British press!”

Laughing he added: “[Do] They have to run to the airport, or they don’t know where the press conference is?

Joined in laughter by Ocon and Gasly, the latter smiled and said: “That’s a fair question.”
