Roberts’ son, Jonathan Christopher Roberts, died in a motorcycle accident in 1989, a devastating event that profoundly affected the actor.

Despite achieving fame with “Bonanza,” Roberts left the show after the 1964-65 season, citing dissatisfaction with the lack of creative freedom and the simplistic portrayal of family dynamics.

Following his departure from “Bonanza,” Roberts returned to theater, seeking more challenging and meaningful roles, although he struggled to replicate his earlier success.

Throughout his life, Roberts was an advocate for social justice, actively supporting civil rights and gender equality, reflecting his strong principles and commitment to activism.

Pernell Roberts passed away on January 24, 2010, at the age of 81, after a long battle with pancreatic cancer, leaving behind a legacy as a talented actor and a passionate advocate for social change.
