FIA Responds to Max Verstappen’s Racing Team Launch and Driver Recruitment — Is It Against the Rules?

Max Verstappen’s bold move to launch his own racing team, Verstappen.com Racing, for the 2025 GT World Challenge Europe season has sparked discussions within the motorsport world — and even caught the attention of the FIA.

The four-time Formula 1 World Champion has not only founded the team but also handpicked British sim racer Chris Lulham as one of his drivers, making headlines as Lulham prepares to transition from virtual to real-world racing.

With Verstappen balancing his F1 career while managing a racing team, many fans began questioning whether his involvement in recruiting drivers and running a team could violate any FIA regulations.

In response, the FIA clarified the situation, shutting down rumors of any potential penalties. An FIA spokesperson stated:

“There are no regulations prohibiting a current Formula 1 driver from owning or managing a racing team in other motorsport categories. Max Verstappen’s involvement with Verstappen.com Racing is entirely within the rules.”

The FIA further emphasized that Verstappen’s activities with his GT team do not conflict with his F1 commitments, nor do they breach any clauses in his current contracts.

Verstappen.com Racing will debut on April 11th, 2025, at Paul Ricard, with Lulham joining Thierry Vermeulen and Harry King in the driver lineup. The team is also set to participate in the iconic 24 Hours of Spa in June — a major step forward for both Verstappen and his handpicked drivers.

While some fans remain curious about how Verstappen will juggle both roles, it’s clear that the FIA has given its stamp of approval. Now, all eyes turn to the track to see if Verstappen’s virtual-to-reality gamble with Lulham will pay off.
