Vanessa Williams and her family are mourning the loss of her beloved mother, Helen Lewis Williams, who passed away on December 28th in London at the age of 85. Helen, a dedicated music teacher and accomplished pianist, was surrounded by family and friends when she succumbed to complications from acute liver failure.

Helen traveled to London to celebrate her milestone 𝐛𝐒𝐫𝐭𝐑day with a special trip to the opening night of “The Devil Wears Prada,” where her daughter Vanessa stars as fashion editor Miranda Priestly. The trip was intended to be a joyous occasion, marking Helen’s 85th 𝐛𝐒𝐫𝐭𝐑day with an extravagant gathering of 150 loved ones. However, during her visit, her health took a significant decline.

Helen Williams was not only a cherished mother but also a passionate educator who instilled confidence and determination in her students. She often encouraged them with the words, “Work the best you can and don’t let anyone tell you that you cannot do something. Make up your mind, prepare yourself, study hard, and be very, very confident.” Her teachings extended beyond the classroom; she offered private piano lessons to students in Westchester County and performed at various community events.

In addition to her work in music education, Helen was recognized for her contributions to the field. She founded the Helen Tinch Williams Scholarship at SUNY in 2017 and was honored with the JC Hillman Award for excellence in education in 2010. Her commitment to music and education also included working with inmates at the Bedford Women’s Correctional Facility, demonstrating her dedication to uplifting others.

Helen is survived by her brother, Frederick Tinch, her 𝘀𝘩π˜ͺ𝘭π˜₯ren Vanessa and Chris Williams, and four grand𝘀𝘩π˜ͺ𝘭π˜₯ren, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Her legacy as a music teacher and mentor will continue to resonate throughout the lives she touched.
