In a heartfelt revelation, actor Marlon Wayans opened up about the profound impact of losing his parents in a recent interview with the New York Times. The comedian, known for his work in the “Scary Movie” franchise, shared that he has lost nearly 60 loved ones over the past three years, including his father, Howell Stoughton, who passed away at the age of 86 in April 2023, and his mother, Alvara Althia, who died in July 2020 at 81.

Reflecting on his grief, Wayans described the emotional turmoil he experienced, stating, “Losing my parents broke me.” In response to his heartache, he created his fourth comedy special, “Good Grief,” which he sees as a therapeutic outlet for both himself and his audience. Through humor, he has found a way to cope with his loss, emphasizing the importance of laughter even in the darkest times. “I rescued myself from depression by learning to laugh in my worst circumstances,” he said.

Wayans noted that his mother’s death particularly shattered him, revealing, “That was my girl. I never got married because I never wanted my mother to be jealous of a woman.” He also spoke poignantly about the loss of his friend Chadwick Boseman, who succumbed to colon cancer in August 2020 at the age of 43, adding to the weight of his grief.

Despite the heavy themes of loss, Wayans assures that “Good Grief” balances humor and heart. He explained that while the special includes moments of vulnerability, it primarily aims to evoke laughter and connection. “I think that’s more important than making you laugh; you want to move somebody,” he said.

With his unique blend of comedy and personal reflection, Wayans hopes to inspire others navigating similar grief, reminding them to find joy even in the midst of sorrow.
