Christopher Nkunku is reportedly ready to end his disappointing spell at Chelsea, with Liverpool emerging as a leading contender for his signature ahead of the summer 2025 transfer window.
According to Foot Mercato, the French forward has initiated steps to leave Stamford Bridge after two injury-plagued seasons, and Liverpool have already started negotiations for a potential deal to bring Nkunku to Anfield.
Nkunku joined Chelsea in 2023 for a fee of £52 million from RB Leipzig, amid high expectations that he would become a focal point in the Blues’ attack. However, recurring injuries have prevented the 26-year-old from finding form or consistency in the Premier League, and he has struggled to make the impact many had hoped for.
Last month, British media reported that Nkunku had formally requested to leave the club in search of a fresh start. The France international is said to be eager to join a Champions League side, making Liverpool a highly attractive destination, especially as Chelsea’s top-five hopes remain uncertain with just two games left in the season.
Under new manager Arne Slot, Liverpool are actively seeking a versatile attacker to strengthen squad depth. Nkunku, who is capable of playing as a striker, second forward, or attacking midfielder, fits the profile the Reds are looking for.
Chelsea, meanwhile, are open to letting Nkunku go if they receive an offer in the region of £35 million. The West London club is keen to reduce its wage bill and reshape the squad ahead of the new season.
Alongside Liverpool, Bayern Munich are also monitoring Nkunku’s situation closely, while Newcastle United have expressed tentative interest. However, the Magpies’ absence from next season’s Champions League could weaken their position in the race.
Nkunku’s future now hinges on how negotiations progress in the coming months. A move to Merseyside could offer him the platform to revive his career at the highest level — and potentially become a key weapon in Liverpool’s title defense next season.
