In what promises to be one of the most high-profile moves of the summer, German star Florian Wirtz has taken a major step toward joining Liverpool after reaching a personal agreement with the Premier League champions. The 22-year-old midfielder confirmed his intention to join the Reds during his contract signing session, delivering a message that excited Liverpool fans and stunned rivals across Europe.
Renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano broke the news on social media platform X, stating that Wirtz has already informed Bayer Leverkusen of his desire to play at Anfield, and has agreed personal terms with Liverpool. Negotiations between the two clubs are ongoing, but the English side is confident of completing the deal this summer — aiming to avoid the saga turning into a long-winded transfer drama.
Speaking to reporters at the signing session, Wirtz said: “It’s an incredible feeling. Liverpool is a club with a rich history and unbelievable fans. I’ve admired the way they play for years, and now to be part of that — it’s something special. I can’t wait to wear the red shirt and give everything on the pitch.”
He added: “I spoke with the manager, and his vision really convinced me. The opportunity to grow here, compete at the highest level, and challenge for titles is what every player dreams of.”
The move is seen as a major coup for Liverpool and a blow to Bayern Munich, who were widely considered the favorites to land Wirtz. Real Madrid and Manchester City also showed interest, but Wirtz made it clear he only had eyes for Anfield.
Sky Germany also confirmed that a “verbal agreement” is already in place between Wirtz and Liverpool. With his close friend and current Leverkusen teammate Jeremie Frimpong also linked with a move to Merseyside, the duo could soon be reunited in England.
While Bayer Leverkusen are holding out for a transfer fee of around €150 million, sources suggest the final deal could include performance-related add-ons to bring the total fee to a more manageable figure for Liverpool.
Florian Wirtz is expected to be a cornerstone in Arne Slot’s new era at Liverpool — a playmaker capable of filling the creative void left by recent departures and leading the Reds into another dominant chapter of their history.
