John Daly left ESPN reporter Marty Smith utterly gobsmacked when he boasted about downing up to 60 of his own brand seltzers in a single day.

The golfer known as “The Wild Thing” lived up to his moniker, not just for his flamboyant presence on the course but also for his high-octane lifestyle off the course.

The 59-year-old golf icon dropped by the ‘Marty and McGee’ podcast recently to chat about his past glories and current adventures on the PGA Tour Champions.

During the show, Daly got the chance to plug his new cocktail range from Good Boy Vodka, and Smith was eager to ask the burning question on everyone’s mind.

“What is the largest quantity of those John Daly seltzers that you’ve consumed in a day?” Smith inquired, only to be astounded by Daly’s answer.

Without any fanfare, Daly candidly responded: “I think I’ve done 55, 60 of these.”

Smith, in disbelief, pressed: “In a day?”.

Daly confirmed: “Yeah, we’re non-carbonated. We know there’s no additive sugar; we’re gluten-free. It’s only 4.5 percent alcohol in them. Yeah, it’s not carbonated; it’s basically water.”

Smith’s co-host Ryan McGee, who also reports on NASCAR, baseball, and more for ESPN, joked: “Yeah, you gotta hydrate. It’s basically water, John.”

Daly, known for his humorous disdain for water, famously opts for Diet Coke as his non-alcoholic beverage of choice, reportedly downing up to 20 cans a day.

2025 has been quite the rollercoaster for Daly already. He’s undergone his 16th hand surgery in four years this past January to fix some troublesome tendons.

But Daly didn’t stay off the greens for long, returning to the PGA Tour Champions by March at the Hoag Classic. He also turned heads at The Masters, where he camped out at Hooters in Augusta, cashing in on the crowds and celebrating an extended endorsement deal with the eatery earlier in the month.

Daly’s life remains as vibrant as his personality, and in a March interview with the Associated Press, he quipped: “I’m like Lazarus. I keep coming back from the dead. I didn’t think I’d been out here for three decades, I’ve only been dead 11 times… 16 surgeries in four years, I’ve lost count pretty much.”

Having beaten bladder cancer back in 2020, Daly was seen competing in the Regions Tradition in Alabama, the season’s first major on the senior circuit, but mysteriously withdrew after just seven holes.

The 1991 PGA champion is notably absent from the lineup at this week’s Senior PGA Championship taking place at Congressional Country Club in Maryland.
