Joaquin Niemann has message for LIV Golf critics as $18M bonus looms – ‘I don’t play for the money’

Joaquin Niemann has insisted money is not his biggest motivator on the course, as the Chilean’s LIV Golf dominance continued in the UK last week.

Niemann banked his fifth LIV title in 11 starts at JCB Golf and Country Club, fending off a charge from Bubba Watson to complete an emphatic wire-to-wire victory. Having sacked both his caddie and coach on the back of missing the cut at The Open, the Torque GC bounced right back to form.

Not only did he take home another LIV trohpy, he also came away with his fifth $4 million cheque of the campaign, ensuring he has now earned over $20 million – more than Scottie Scheffler pocketed in 2025. Currently topping the LIV standings, Niemann will pocket an extra $18 million if he keeps the No. 1 spot at the end of the season.

His incredible form has been rewarded with lucrative payouts, and while critics have claimed this is the key reason for golfers playing LIV events, Niemann admitted this is not his main driving force.

“[There is] definitely a lot of money at stake, but I don’t play for the money,” he told reporters on Sunday.

“Whenever I was there on the course, feeling that competition, I feel like sometimes trying to win for myself is probably one of the biggest challenges. That’s why I think it kind of became pretty tough during the round today, having Bubba coming up pretty hot.

“All I want to do is win. I want to be the best in the field. Yeah, I don’t really think about the money when I’m in that situation. I feel like if Bubba would’ve beaten me, I would be pretty p—– and not happy. Yeah, and I think money will not change that feeling.”

Despite his impressive form over the past two seasons, LIV’s No. 1 golfer finds himself 95th in the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) with the league yet to acquire recognition from the ranking system.

Niemann’s LIV rival Jon Rahm believes the Chilean is currently one of the top-10 players in the world, an opinion the Torque captain agrees with.

“Yeah, for sure,” he said when asked if he felt the same way as Rahm.

“I feel like anywhere that I go, if I play my best game, I know I can win. I think that’s the only thing that kind of matters for me, is to find that A-game more often. But, yeah, I mean, it is what it is. I love golf.

“I love competing. I love working for improvement and try to find those improvements, and I feel like every time it’s harder and harder to find those small margins.

“Yeah, that’s what drives me. Yeah, I mean, I’m really looking forward for what’s coming at the end of the season.”
