The debate between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo has defined a generation of soccer fans, and WWE Hall of Famer Rey Mysterio believes professional wrestling has a similar discussion taking place today.
Speaking on a recent edition of “The Late Run” podcast, Mysterio compared the ongoing debate over Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins to the legendary Messi-Ronaldo rivalry when asked which current WWE stars fit that mold. He said,
“I would have to say Seth Rollins being one of them because he’s a masterpiece at what he does. He is ‘The Architect’ really. And on the other end, I would probably have to give it to Roman [Reigns]. He mastered this down really fast.”
Mysterio also pointed to Reigns’ family legacy and the unique paths both men have taken to reach the top of the industry. He said,
“And again, you talk about the legacy and the dynasty of where he came from,” Mysterio continued. “I was just talking about like current talent, cause we can go back and talk about The Rock and people that have been before, but yeah, I truly believe that especially knowing that those two guys were part of a team at one point, they kind of went their separate ways and now they’re both on top of the game.”
Rollins and Reigns first rose to prominence together as members of The Shield before embarking on separate singles careers that have seen both become multi-time World Champions and headline countless major WWE events.
