The explanation begins with basic respiratory biology. The human body produces about a liter of nasal mucus every day, a sticky substance that acts as a trap for dust, pollen, bacteria, and viruses before they can reach the lungs.

As the mucus dries, it forms the crusty clumps commonly known as boogers. These clumps are not simply waste. They contain antigens, fragments of the pathogens that have been captured at the body’s entrance. Napper suggested that swallowing these trapped fragments might deliver them to the digestive tract, where a significant portion of the body’s immune cells reside.
This process could act as a form of immune training, reintroducing weakened or contained versions of germs so the body can recognize and respond to them more effectively before a serious infection occurs. The broader question of whether ancient humans ate their boogers points to a much wider set of evidence. Nose-picking and mucus consumption appear frequently across the animal kingdom, including chimpanzees, gorillas, elephants, and even some birds. Evolutionary biologists tend to view behaviors that recur across so many unrelated species as traits with a survival advantage, even when the mechanism is not immediately obvious. No single thread is definitive, but together they build a plausible picture. There are important caveats for modern readers. Doctors warn that aggressive nose-picking, especially with unwashed hands, can introduce new bacteria, damage delicate nasal tissue, and potentially increase the risk of spreading infections deeper into the body. An ancient human clearing their nose in an environment already full of familiar local microbes faced very different conditions from a modern person whose hands have touched dozens of unfamiliar surfaces.
The distinction explains why scientists treat this as a hypothesis worth studying rather than a blanket recommendation. The persistence of the habit across every known human society and era also suggests a deeply rooted instinct rather than a cultural quirk. Such stubborn universality is exactly the pattern expected from a trait embedded in human biology by evolution.
Researchers conclude that ancient humans almost certainly ate their boogers on at least some occasions, likely without embarrassment and without any understanding of the biological processes involved. Whether the habit actually improved their health remains a question science has not yet resolved. The final answer may take years to emerge given how little research funding this particular topic attracts.
