Kirk Cameron has finally broken his silence on the decades of rumors surrounding his time on Growing Pains, offering a candid look at how his sudden religious conversion reshaped the hit sitcom and strained his relationships with the cast. When Growing Pains first aired in 1985, it was marketed as an ensemble family comedy centered on the Seaver household. But within just a few episodes, one character dominated the spotlight. Mike Seaver, the mischievous eldest son played by a then-unknown 14-year-old Cameron, became an instant sensation.
Fan mail poured into ABC offices by the thousands. Magazine covers featuring his face flew off shelves. By season two, producers were reshaping scripts to give Mike more screen time and more storylines centered on his antics, quietly morphing the family sitcom into a star vehicle built around Cameron’s charisma. But the real shift didn’t happen on camera.
It happened within Cameron himself. Around the fourth season, Cameron experienced a profound religious conversion, becoming a born-again Christian. He later credited the journey with beginning after he met a girl and showed up at her church, initially intending to fake his way through the service. As his faith deepened, Cameron grew uncomfortable with certain themes and jokes in the scripts.
He began requesting changes, asking writers to tone down sexually suggestive content or avoid scenes that conflicted with his values. His intentions may have been sincere, but his sudden moral stance created real friction on set. Writers and producers grew frustrated as scripts were altered late into production and some storylines had to be scrapped entirely. Fellow cast members were caught in the middle, torn between supporting their co-star and feeling the weight of a disrupted creative flow.
The tension extended to personal relationships. Tracy Gold, who played Carol Seaver, later opened up about feeling isolated and judged by Cameron during the later years. She recalled the once-friendly dynamic turning formal, almost strained. Other cast members noted that Cameron became more private, distancing himself from group activities and post-filming hangouts.
The divide became most visible after the show ended. When Gold married in 1994, Cameron did not attend the wedding and did not send a message either. Reflecting on that period, Cameron said that if he could go back, he would make decisions that were less inadvertently hurtful to the cast. The show itself was also struggling.
By the early 1990s, ratings had slipped as audiences turned to newer, edgier programming. Producers scrambled for solutions, bringing in a young Leonardo DiCaprio in season seven to play Luke, a troubled teen taken in by the Seavers. While DiCaprio’s performance drew praise, it wasn’t enough to reverse the show’s decline. One longtime industry peer said much of the controversy surrounding Cameron had been distorted or taken out of context over the years.
The friend described Cameron as someone who literally loves everybody, but acknowledged that when he first found his faith, he went overboard and cut people out of his life who didn’t share his beliefs. The friend added that Cameron eventually took the cast aside and apologized for his behavior, admitting he hadn’t been loving or caring toward them. Now at 54, Cameron is a father of six and a faith-based filmmaker. In a 2023 podcast interview, he addressed the long-held perception that he became difficult to work with during the show’s run.
“I was a kid trying to make sense of a lot of things,” he said. “I had a real change of heart about the kind of person I wanted to be. I didn’t always communicate that well, and I’ve learned from that. ”
He also confirmed that his spiritual convictions influenced how he approached scripts and relationships, while expressing no resentment toward his former castmates.
He has spoken warmly of Gold and Alan Thicke, noting their professionalism and reflecting on the special bond the cast once shared despite their differences. Cameron has acknowledged that his future faith created consequences, but he insists he was simply trying to figure out who he wanted to be in the middle of an extraordinary situation.
