A California court partially dismissed a $3 million lawsuit filed against Jada Pinkett Smith by Bilal Salaam, Will Smith’s longtime assistant and confidant, but the broader case remains active. Salaam’s lawsuit, filed in December 2025, accuses Jada of intentional infliction of emotional distress and claims she threatened him at a private birthday party in September 2021. According to the filing, Jada confronted Salaam at the party surrounded by people she brought with her and told him that if he kept telling her personal business, he would end up missing or catch a bullet. The lawsuit also alleges Salaam was pressured to sign an NDA at the same event.
Salaam further claims that after he refused to help Jada manage the fallout from Will Smith’s Oscars slap because the tasks were illegal or morally wrong, Jada launched a campaign of retaliation against him. Jada called the lawsuit false, uncorroborated, and made to generate attention, and she filed a motion to have it dismissed. On April 23, 2026, a California judge struck the emotional distress claim and ordered Salaam to pay just under $50,000 in legal fees. The broader case, however, is still active in court.
Salaam spent nearly four decades inside the Smith household as Will Smith’s closest assistant. His decision to speak publicly marks a significant shift, as he had previously remained silent for years. The lawsuit emerged around the same time that online commentators, including Jaguar Wright, began publicly questioning why Salaam had not spoken about what he witnessed inside the Smith home. The emergence of this lawsuit sits against a much larger backdrop involving Jaden Smith, the eldest son of Will and Jada, whose public behavior has raised concerns over the past few years.
In October 2024, Jaden sat down with Complex magazine for an interview that the reporter, Eric Skelton, later described as one of the strangest he had ever conducted. For 45 minutes, Jaden repeatedly quoted the Twilight movies, pulling handwritten quotes out of his pocket mid-conversation. When asked directly about his sadness, he responded with a Twilight quote instead of an answer. After the interview dropped, Jaden posted on X: “All the weird stuff you have ever seen me do was me thinking I was totally normal.
At the end of the day, I have been trying to fit in this whole time, and I guess it is not exactly going to plan. ” That same month, he released an EP made in direct collaboration with his therapist, saying he was crying in the studio while making it. He told Complex he hoped psychologists of the future would study the project to figure out what was really wrong with him. The central chapter in this wider family story involves August Alsina.
Alsina was not a random man Jada met somewhere; he was Jaden Smith’s friend. Jaden personally introduced August to the family after the two bonded in 2015 while filming a TV pilot together in Atlanta. Jada and August first met at the Wireless Festival in London that year, where Jada was watching Jaden and Willow perform. At the time Jada began a relationship with August, he was 22 years old, dealing with a serious autoimmune liver disease and significant mental health struggles.
Jada was 43. On Red Table Talk in 2020, Jada confirmed the relationship was real, framing its beginning as wanting to help his health and mental state before confirming it became something more. August later said the experience broke him down, his career never recovered, and the fallout almost killed him. Jada’s public word for what happened with her son’s friend was “entanglement.
” Jaden has never commented on it publicly. He has been asked about his family in dozens of interviews over the years and has never once addressed what happened with August Alsina. In 2022, a source close to Jaden told Us Weekly that Jaden knows his family is different and that his mother’s openness about their personal life has never been easy for him. DL Hughley said publicly that the dynamic between Jada and August was predatory, pointing out that a 43-year-old woman pursued a 22-year-old sick and mentally vulnerable man whom she met through her own son. In June 2023, Jaden stood on stage at the Psychedelic Science Conference in Denver and publicly credited his mother as the person who first introduced the entire Smith family to psychedelic drugs. His words: “I think it was my mom, actually, that was really the first one to make that step for the family.
It was just her for a really, really long time, and then eventually, it just trickled and evolved, and everybody found it in their own ways. ”
Jada had already confirmed on Red Table Talk that she had been using plant medicine for about 10 years to manage depression, saying she had previously been prescribed Prozac before moving to plant medicine. Jaden described why he personally uses psychedelics, saying he was trying to break through what he called “a wall of trauma. ” He said psychedelics are a way to tear down that wall and see what is beyond it.
He never names the trauma in any interview or public statement. The lawsuit filed by Salaam, the man who was described as Will Smith’s closest confidant for decades, now moves forward in California courts amid these unresolved questions about what has been happening inside the Smith household.
