The 44-year-old has emerged as the frontrunner ahead of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, with both candidates having met with United’s top brass towards the end of last week.

The former United midfielder served as an assistant coach at Old Trafford from July 2018 to December 2021. Prior to his departure, following Solskjaer’s dismissal, Carrick oversaw United for three matches. These included a 2-0 win against Villarreal in the Champions League, a 1-1 draw at Chelsea in the Premier League, and a 3-2 home victory over Arsenal. Carrick subsequently made way for Ralf Rangnick to assume control.
