Generosity and Comfort: Mexico’s Richest Man Offers $80M for NYC’s Largest Townhouse for a Life of Comfort and Charitable Endeavors

Mexico’s richest man offers $80M for NYC’s largest townhouse to live comfortably and charity

Telecom mogul Carlos Slim, Mexico’s former wealthiest person and one-time global richest, has relisted his opulent New York City townhouse at an astounding $80 miℓℓiо𝚗, per StreetEasy.

Slim, also known as Carlos Slim Helú, previously listed the expansive 20,000-square-foot property on the Upper East Side at 1009 Fifth Ave for the same sum in 2015. This asking price, a record-brеɑkinɡ figure at the time, is documented in StreetEasy records.

Should it secure an eight-figure sale, the townhouse would establish a fresh record for New York City real estate. StreetEasy data identifies Vincent Viola’s $59 miℓℓiо𝚗 2021 sale of 12 E. 69th St as the current benchmark.

The townhouse’s significance resonates widely. It is heralded as the largest available for sale among the boroughs, according to StreetEasy.

Slim, commanding a net worth of $90.7 biℓℓiо𝚗, procured the elegant limestone and red-brick property from the late Russian oil magnate Tamir Sapir for $44 miℓℓiо𝚗 in 2010.

A distinguished creation by Welch, Smith & Provot, the residence showcases the Italian Renaissance Palazzo style and was built between 1899 and 1901. Notably, it is recognized as one of the few remaining private Fifth Avenue homes overlooking Central Park.

Internally, the townhouse boasts exquisite details, from marble fireplaces to intricate moldings and a remarkable five-level grand staircase. Spanning 27 feet along Fifth Avenue and extending 100 feet along 82nd Street, the property offers versatility, suggesting a range of potential transformations – from a private residence to a gallery, store, museum, or foundation – given its prime location near the Met Museum.

The Slim family is behind América Móvil, Latin America’s leading mobile communication company. Carlos Slim’s journey, from the son of Catholic Lebanese immigrants to becoming self-made, included studies in Civil Engineering at the National Autonomous University of Mexico’s School of Engineering (UNAM).
