Acknowledging the Mistake: Left Back ‘Kicking Himself’ for Error Leading to Bellingham’s Goal in Scotland’s Loss

After his mistake on Tuesday contributed to England’s second goal, Andy Robertson acknowledged that he had let Scotland down.

In a 150th Anniversary Heritage Match to honor England and Scotland’s first meeting in 1872, Gareth Southgate’s team faced the Scots at a rowdy Hampden Park.

After a s𝓀𝒾𝓁𝓁ful finish from Phil Foden gave the Three Lions an early lead, Robertson flubbed a clearance attempt, and Jude Bellingham pounced to make it 2-0 after 35 minutes.

Harry Maguire’s own goal gave Steve Clarke’s team some hope, but Harry Kane’s third goal for the Three Lions nine minutes from time gave the Three Lions victory.

The Liverpool defender Robertson lamented his costly error and vowed to make amends in a post-game interview with beIN SPORTS.

Andy Robertson admitted he let Scotland down after his error during their 3-1 loss to Englamd

Robertson missed the opportunity to clear the ball before Jude Bellingham gave Gareth Southgate’s team a 2-0 lead.

The second goal was entirely my fault, he admitted. “Clearly, it cannot occur. But you take it in stride and attempt to respond, and in the second half, we managed to get back into the game.

We had a few half-chances, the crowd was energized, and then we handed the ball to Harry Kane, who finished the game with a half-yard.

I despise disappointing this squad, and tonight I have done just that. I hate losing goals, but I just wasn’t quite expecting the ball to fall at my feet, so it went to him.

And Bellingham won’t let you get away with it if you face him while he’s in his current condition, the speaker added.

I had to offer my regrets to the team and boss. I did that and just attempted to respond positively in the second half, and I believe I succeeded in doing that, but tonight I will undoubtedly be cursing myself.

After Scotland’s incredible recent run of form, the match was viewed as a significant test for them.

Clarke’s team has dominated Euro 2024 qualifying, winning five of their first five games after falling to Ukraine in a World Cup play-off in the summer of 2022.

The team’s presence in Germany next summer is now all but guaranteed, and Robertson stressed that the team’s outstanding progress shouldn’t be stopped despite the team’s heartbreaking loss to England.

Robertson revealed he apologised to his team-mates and said he’ll be ‘kicking himself’ tonight

He also maintained that despite the loss, Steve Clarke’s team shouldn’t lose their momentum.

He continued, “Today, it was definitely individual mistakes that cost us. We played poorly in the first half but significantly better in the second.

It only demonstrates that there is potential for improvement and that more effort is required. But it’s crucial that this doesn’t slow down our progress.

The goal this week was to win five straight qualification games, thus the England game wasn’t considered until after Cyprus’ match against Scotland (which Scotland won 3-0 on Friday).

“We must keep in mind that this is a good time for us.”
