Why Josko Gvardiol, Jeremy Doku and Rico Lewis are not in Man City 20-man Premier League squad list

Man City have confirmed their 20-man squad for the 2023/24 Premier League season.

Now the summer transfer window is done, clubs in the top flight were required to confirm their full squad lists up to January when the market reopens again. For the most part, there are no surprises.

Erling Haaland, Jack Grealish, Phil Foden and Julian Alvarez are all among the players who will be available to play in the Premier League. But there are some notable absentees.

New signings Josko Gvardiol and Jeremy Doku are both absent from the squad list as is last season’s breakout star Rico Lewis. However, there is no reason to be alarmed.

As well as being able to pick a maximum of 25 players for the squad, the Premier League also allows clubs to pick players under the age of 21 without the need to register them in their squad list. This means the City trio will be eligible to play in the top flight this season despite being left off the list.

One player who does make the cut is Zack Steffen. The out-of-favor shot-stopper makes the list despite being unlikely to start ahead of either Ederson or Stefan Ortega.

City’s Premier League campaign will resume on Saturday when they travel to West Ham United. The Blues will be buoyed by the return of manager Pep Guardiola to the touchline after he missed some games prior to the international break with a back problem.

In his absence, City have been in stellar form, maintaining their 100 per cent start to the campaign with wins over Sheffield United and Fulham.

FULL SQUAD:

Goalkeepers: Ederson, Stefan Ortega Moreno, Scott Carson*, Zack Steffen

Defenders: Kyle Walker*, John Stones*, Ruben Dias, Manuel Akanji, Nathan Ake, Sergio Gomez

Midfielders: Kalvin Phillips*, Rodrigo, Mateo Kovacic, Bernardo Silva, Matheus Nunes, Kevin De Bruyne

Forwards: Erling Haaland, Julian Alvarez, Jack Grealish*, Phil Foden*
