Harry Maguire’s mother responds to criticism of Manchester United star with emotional message

Harry Maguire featured for England during the international break and he received abuse after his own goal against Scotland.

Maguire’s mother has spoken out.

Harry Maguire’s mother has condemned the abuse of the Manchester United star in an emotional message on social media.

Maguire did not start in England’s friendly at Hampden Park in Glasgow earlier this week, but Marc Guehi picked up an injury and he replaced him for the second half, which led to his every touch being jeered by Scotland fans.

Unfortunately, that was followed by Maguire scoring an own goal in the 67th minute when turning a Scotland cross into his own net.

Speaking after the game, England boss Gareth Southgate said the treatment of Maguire ‘makes him livid’ and he suggested it was a result of an unfair narrative around the player that’s been built over the last few years.

“From a Scotland’s fans’ point of view, I get it. I’ve no complaints about what they did. It’s a consequence of ridiculous treatment of him for a long period of time,” Southgate said before praising the resilience of Maguire.

The player’s mother, Zoe Maguire, has now taken to social media to speak out against the abuse her son has received.

She wrote: “As a mum seeing the level of negative and abusive comments which my son is receiving from some fans, pundits and the media is disgraceful and totally unacceptable to any walk of life never mind someone who works his socks off for club and country.

“I was there in the stand as usual, It’s not acceptable what’s been created, over nothing. I understand that in the football world there are ups and downs, positives and negatives but what Harry receives has gone far beyond ‘football’.

Maguire’s mother posted the message.

“For me seeing him go through what he’s going through is not ok. I would hate to have to see any other parents or players go through this in the future, especially the young boys and girls breaking through the ranks today.

“Harry has a massive heart and it’s a good job he’s mentally strong and can handle it as others may not be able to. I wish this sort of abuse on nobody.”

Maguire is now returning to United and he’s set to be in the squad to play Brighton this weekend.
