Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana says he let the team down with his mistake in their 4-3 Champions League defeat by Bayern Munich.
Onana fumbled a Leroy Sane shot into the net in the 28th minute of the match, gifting Bayern the lead in what had been a close contest.
The Bavarians went 2-0 up shortly after, with Serge Gnabry adding their second goal.
“We started very good but after my mistake, we lost control of the game,” Onana said to TNT Sports after the match. “It was a difficult situation for us, for me especially because I’m the one who let the team down.
“The team was good. I think because of me, we didn’t win this game. I’m happy for the work of the team. You just have to move on, it’s the life of a goalkeeper. We didn’t win today — it’s because of me.
“I think yes (the first goal was a big moment). We were very good on the ball, they didn’t create many chances and their first shot on target, I made a mistake. It was a key point. The team went down because of that mistake.
“I have to learn from it, move on. It’s not an easy situation. I’m very happy for the comeback of the team, we were fighting until the end. I have to recognise because of me, we didn’t win.
“I have a lot to prove (to the United fans) because, to be honest, my start in Manchester it’s not so good, it’s not how I want. To play how I played today, for me, it’s one of my worst games.
“It’s difficult because we have big ambition, we are a big club and we want to win everything. It was a big opportunity for us to bounce back from the situation we are facing.
“It’s a tough time, we have to be together, we have to continue working how we are doing and learning from our mistakes because it’s the only thing to do.”
Rasmus Hojlund grabbed his first United goal shortly after half-time, before Harry Kane converted a penalty in the 53rd minute. Casemiro then scored twice late on either side of a lovely finish from substitute Mathys Tel as the game finished 4-3.
Onana and United return to Premier League action on Saturday when they travel to Burnley. Their next Champions League game comes at home against Galatasaray on October 3.
