United had speculative chances of their own when Scott McTominay smashed an effort towards goal at the end of the half only for Ederson to produce a brilliant one-handed save.
There was similar goalkeeping heroics at the other end moments later when Andre Onana clawed Haaland’s header off the line.
The United shot-stopper wasn’t able to repeat the feat at the start of the second half when Haaland was found in acres of space and headed coolly into a virtually open net to double City’s lead.

Mason Mount’s half time introduction unhinged United’s midfield balance and Erik ten Hag’s tactical change hindered more than helped the hosts get back into the game.
City began to exert their control and United could barely get a foothold in proceedings as Onana was forced into making several smart stops while United hung on.
Haaland unselfishly played a cross back into the box for Phil Foden to score City’s third and wrap up a convincing victory at the home of their rivals.
