CONSTANTINE 2 – GETS UPDATE FROM PRODUCER !
Constantine 2 is set to be a DC Elseworlds movie. Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura has expressed optimism about the sequel’s progress, highlighting John Constantine as a unique and compelling character. This film will embrace a darker, R-rated tone that better suits Constantine’s story.
In recent updates, it was confirmed that Keanu Reeves’ Constantine 2 is being developed as part of DC’s Elseworlds, indicating that this version of Constantine will exist outside James Gunn’s new DC Universe. Speaking to Comicbook.com, Lorenzo di Bonaventura shared his hopes for the project, comparing it to his work on Madame Web. He emphasized that both characters are unique, saying, “I hope it does [move forward], because it’s a great character.”
Reeves first portrayed the Hellblazer in 2005’s Constantine and has consistently advocated for a sequel. Fans were thrilled by the September 2022 announcement that Constantine 2 was finally in the works. Since then, there have been several updates on the film’s direction.
The decision to make Constantine 2 an Elseworlds movie means it won’t be part of the main DC Universe continuity. James Gunn has set high expectations for Elseworlds projects, stating, “It’s got to be something really special for us to tell that story outside of our regular continuity, and to spend the money on it to make it.” The continued development of Constantine 2 suggests it has the potential to meet this standard.
Unlike the original film, which was initially developed as PG-13 and later rated R, Constantine 2 will fully embrace its R rating from the start. Director Francis Lawrence has indicated that this creative freedom will allow the sequel to delve into the darker, more supernatural aspects of Constantine’s world, giving Reeves the chance to deliver a truly fitting portrayal of the character.
