Phil Mickelson congratulated Bryson DeChambeau after his win at the 2024 US Open at Pinehurst No. 2 in Pinehurst, North Carolina. The win was the second Major victory of DeChambeau’s career. His first Major win came at the 2020 US Open when he got better of Matthew Wolf by six strokes.
PGA Tour Pro and LIV Golf player Phil Mickelson took to X to congratulate DeChambeau. In a post, Mickelson wrote:
“Bryson is a STALLION! What a thrilling US Open and amazing performance. Congrats on a great win @b_dechambeau. No one works harder, deserves it more and is more fun to watch.”
Bryson DeChambeau was neck and neck with McIlroy throughout the final round of the third Major of the year. However, the three-shot lead that DeChambeau carried at the end of the third day helped him edge McIlroy.
DeChambeau scored 1-over 71 to finish with 6-under 274 in the four rounds at the US Open 2024. On the front nine, he couldn’t score a birdie but scored one bogey on the par-4 4th hole. On the back nine, he scored two birdies on the 10th and 13th holes and two bogeys on the 12th and 15th holes.
After winning the tournament, DeChambeau said (via BBC):
“That was huge to get up and down and win this prestigious championship – that will be the highlight of my life.”
DeChambeau won by one stroke over Rory McIlroy, who scored 1-under 69 in the final round to finish with 5-under 275. McIlroy missed two putts inside four feet in the last three holes. DeChambeau praised McIlroy and said (via BBC):
“Rory is one of the best to ever play. Being able to fight against a great like that is pretty special. For him to miss that putt (on par-4 18th), I’d never wish it on anybody. Luckily, things went my way.”
Bryson DeChambeau had +1800 and Rory McIlroy had +1100 odds to win the tournament as per BetMGM Sportsbook. DeChambeau took home $4.3 million out of the $21.5m prize money of the US Open 2024.
The LIV Golfer also secured an exemption from the next 10 US Open tournaments. He also got exempted from the next 5 tournaments of the three other Majors.
Bryson DeChambeau said that crowd support for Rory in the final round pushed him to do better at the US Open 2024
Rory McIlroy, who was trailing by three strokes at the end of the third day, took the lead by two strokes after he secured five birdies till the 13th hole. He made birdies on 1st, 9th, 10th, 12th and 13th holes. Bryson DeChambeau said that the crowd support for McIlroy spurred him to intensify his efforts. He said (via BBC):
“I even saw on 10 where he made birdie. I’m like, ‘oh, man, he’s gunning, he’s going for it’. So I had to put my foot on the pedal and push down pretty hard.”I could hear ‘Rory, Rory’ chants. That was fun because it gave me the knowledge of what I had to do. There was also a lot of, ‘go USA, go Europe’. It was a fun battle between us.”
This was Rory McIlroy’s fifth consecutive top-10 finish at the US Open. He has also finished 11 times in top-5, since 2015, at Majors but has failed to win the tournament.
