Universal has set the new Exorcist movie from Doctor Sleep director Mike Flanagan for a fitting release date. The film from Blumhouse and Morgan Creek will hit THEATERS on Friday the 13th — MARCH 13, 2026.

The film is described as a “radical new take” on the iconic horror franchise that has been haunting audiences since 1973. Any plot details are being kept under wraps.The filmmakers say their new movie is not a sequel to any previous Exorcist film and that it charts a new course for the legendary franchise. The previous movie in the series, The Exorcist: Believer, earned just $65.5M in the U.S. and Canada and $136.2M worldwide. This followed NBCUniversal, Peacock, and Blumhouse’s acquisition of the rights from Morgan Creek for $400M in July 2021. David Gordon Green, the director of that movie, will not be involved in the next installment.

The new film will be produced by Trevor Macy for Intrepid Pictures and Flanagan through his new Red Room Pictures banner. John Scherer is also working on the film on behalf of Intrepid.

This project marks the fourth collaboration between Flanagan and Blumhouse. He previously wrote and directed Oculus (2013), Hush (2016), and Ouija: Origin of Evil (2016). Along with Doctor Sleep, Flanagan has created films such as The Haunting of Hill House, Midnight Mass, and Gerald’s Game, as well as last year’s Netflix miniseries The Fall of the House of Usher.
