Gag City is in disarray. Nicki Minaj shared a cryptic announcement involving the word “single” and The Barbz don’t know what to think.
On Monday afternoon (June 10), the 41-year-old rapper wrote “Yes Single …” on X (formerly Twitter), which caused a lot of confusion for her fans. She is currently on the European leg of the Pink Friday 2 World Tour, so if she were alluding to new music, it would make sense. Dropping a new song during a tour is common for artists, and it has been since six months since she released Pink Friday 2.
However, there’s another meaning of the word: her relationship status. Minaj married Kenneth Petty, the father of her son “Papa Bear,” in 2019. Their marriage has been a source of controversy as Petty was convicted of rape in 1995, served four years in prison, and is a registered 𝓈ℯ𝓍 offender. He was also convicted of first-degree manslaughter in 2006 and served just under seven years in prison for that crime.
Nicki Minaj’s tweet could be connected to a speech she made at her Paris show on Sunday (June 9). “I don’t want to be loved, I don’t wanna love anyone,” she told the crowd. “All it’s ever done is take away my powers […] I’d rather be not with some person in my face all day just having a secret life and a sneaky life behind my back.”
She uploaded a video on social media recounting her experience delivering “Papa Bear” and shouting out all of the mothers in the world. Her tone seemed very exasperated and in need of affirmation, which could be a result of her and Kenneth Petty splitting up. Time will tell if either of them confirms a breakup or if more information comes out.
“SPEAK UP NOW NICKI!! DONT LEAVE US WITH THIS,” one fan commented. “Like you’re dropping one or you are?” another fan asked. “WHAT DOES THIS MEAN ONIKA,” another user asked. The Barbz are not okay with uncertainty.
It’s been a busy year for Nicki Minaj. She hit the road in March for the Pink Friday 2 World Tour, hitting cities such as Oakland, Seattle, Atlanta, Philadelphia, New York City, and Toronto. Towards the end of May, she headed overseas to Amsterdam, Birmingham, London, Glasgow, and more.
She will finish up the European leg with shows in Copenhagen, Stockholm, Milan, and Dublin before getting a few months off. Minaj will begin the second North American leg of her tour in September, doubling back on several cities she hit between March and May.
The Pink Friday 2 World Tour is in support of her December LP, Pink Friday 2. It was led by the singles “Super Freaky Girl” and “Last Time I Saw You” and featured Drake, Lil Wayne, Future, Lil Uzi Vert, and more. The highly anticipated sequel to her debut album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, sold over 228,000 album-equivalent units, and recorded the largest vinyl sales week for a female rapper ever.
