Billy Horschel regrets wearing Tiger Woods’ colors at the Tour Championship, says he was ‘punished’ for stealing the look

Billy Horschel expressed regret for wearing Tiger Woods’ iconic colors during the first round of the 2024 Tour Championship. Horschel teed off at the ongoing PGA Tour event at East Lake Golf Club, sporting a red polo paired with black pants—a combination famously worn by Tiger Woods during the final rounds of golf tournaments. However, Horschel wore it during the first round of the Tour Championship.

Billy Horschel was not happy with his choice. Following the round, he shared a post on his X (formerly Twitter) account, regretting that he had worn his PGA Tour rival’s colors. Horschel stated, “Gator God punished me,” as he struggled with his game in the first round of the Tour Championship, shooting a 73 and settling at the bottom of the leaderboard.

“Me contemplating why I decided to wear red and black….The mojo I was hoping to get from it by repping my good friend, Arthur Blank- Atlanta Falcons, didn’t materialize. It’s like the Gator Gods punished me for wearing our rivals colors,” Horschel wrote on his X.

Tiger Woods is widely recognized for wearing red polos and black pants in the final round of events, a tradition dating back to his college days. Explaining the reason behind his iconic outfit, Woods once shared in an interview that his mother believes it’s a “power color.”

“I just stuck with it out of superstition, and it worked. I just happened to choose a school that actually was red, and we wore red on our final day of events. So it worked out. I wear red on Sundays because my mom thinks that is my power color. You know, you should always listen to your mom,” Woods said as quoted by AS.com

Earlier this year, Tiger Woods even launched his clothing brand in collaboration with TaylorMade, named “Sun Day Red.”

A look into Billy Horschel’s performance at 2024 Tour Championship

Billy Horschel had a rough outing in the first round of the 2024 Tour Championship. He started his game on the first tee with a bogey and added another bogey on the seventh hole. However, he made a birdie on the next hole. He made two bogeys and a birdie on the back nine. Horschel ended the round with four bogeys and two birdies, finishing with a score of 2-over 73.

The tournament uses a starting strokes format, meaning players begin with a starting score based on their FedEx Cup ranking. Billy Horschel’s starting score was 1-under par. After shooting 2-over par in the first round, his overall score came to 1-over par, placing him in solo 30th position on the leaderboard.
