JJ Redick Wants Anthony Davis to Make a Massive Change in Lakers’ Offense
Los Angeles Lakers head coach JJ Redick is setting new expectations for his star forward, Anthony Davis, pushing him to expand his game in a way that could redefine the Lakers’ offense. Redick, who took over the coaching role this season, has emphasized that Davis needs to become a more prominent threat from beyond the arc, adding a critical layer to his already versatile s𝓀𝒾𝓁𝓁 set.
“He’s been on me all summer about shooting 3s,” Davis said in a recent interview. “Even [in] the Olympics when I [made] a 3, he’d text me, ‘That’s what I wanna see.’ So for him, it’s definitely gonna be about shooting more 3s.”
Redick’s approach marks a shift from the previous coaching strategies under Darvin Ham, where Davis often dominated closer to the basket, rarely taking shots from deep. The new head coach believes that unlocking Davis’ potential as a perimeter shooter will elevate the entire team. “Anthony has the ability to stretch the floor and create mismatches,” Redick explained. “When a player of his caliber can step out and hit threes, it opens up so many options for the team, especially with the kind of shooting and playmaking we already have.”
Davis has shown flashes of being a capable three-point shooter throughout his career, particularly during the 2020 NBA Playoffs when his critical threes helped the Lakers secure a championship. However, under Ham’s system, Davis focused more on his interior game, occasionally leaving the three-point line untouched.
Redick’s new strategy not only gives Davis more offensive freedom but also relieves some pressure off LeBron James, who has been the primary playmaker in recent seasons. With Davis stretching the floor, the Lakers can maximize their offensive firepower and take advantage of the shooting talents of their roster.
If Davis embraces this change and finds consistency from beyond the arc, Redick’s Lakers could emerge as serious contenders in the Western Conference this season.
