Tiger Woods’ former coach Hank Haney reckons Rory McIlroy is ‘finally on the right track’ after the Northern Irishman revealed the swing changes he is currently working on.
McIlroy, 35, has given an interview to Golf Digest where he revealed what he is trying to change.
The Northern Irishman told Luke Kerr Dineen that he feels as though he currently has the club far too across the line at the top of the swing and his lead hand is far too cupped.
It leads to McIlroy missing shots right, as was evident during the closing stages of the 2024 U.S. Open at Pinehurst No.2 where the Ulsterman collapsed in epic fashion.
McIlroy identified the fault in his swing in 2023 and his frustration was illustrated during one segment of the Netflix documentary Full Swing where he explained to his caddie Harry Diamond in the locker room that he wanted to completely reboot his swing.
He said that he feels as though the problem lies in a poor takeaway and if he can correct that then it will lead to straighter shots.
Haney reacted to the video on X by saying: “On the right track but what do I know.”
This is not the first time Haney has offered his unfiltered thoughts about McIlroy.
In the immediate aftermath of the 2024 U.S. Open, Haney suggested that McIlroy’s caddie Diamond was partly to blame.
For his part, McIlroy shrugged off the harsh words.
He said if he wasn’t willing to listen to Haney’s advice then he certainly wasn’t willing to listen to his criticism.
“They are never there to say Harry did such a great job when I win, but they are always there to criticize when we don’t win,” McIlroy previously said of Diamond’s naysayers.
“At the end of the day, they are not there.
“They are not in the arena. They are not the ones hitting the shots and making the decisions.”
