Liverpool look set to be able to conduct their January transfer plans from a position of strength in 2025.
There’s still a little way to go before the window swings open in the New Year, but the Reds are sitting pretty at the top of the Premier League.
Although results have been remarkably good under Arne Slot so far, that has at times felt in spite of a very quiet first transfer window at Anfield for the Dutchman.
Despite constant links with both central midfielders and centre-backs, Liverpool chose to sign neither and go with what they already had.
Clearly, that has proven to be no bad thing, with the Liverpool squad stepping up hugely so far.
But as Slot looks to kick his team on in the second-half of the season, perhaps addressing that lingering midfield issue could be just what the Reds need. With that in mind, those pesky links to Martin Zubimendi simply will not go away.

Liverpool identified Zubimendi as the ideal player to bolster their midfield over the summer.
That the 25-year-old turned them down will have been a huge source of frustration for the Reds. Liverpool were reported to believe that Zubimendi had given them his word that he was ready to join.
After he ultimately went back on that some supporters will likely have felt that Liverpool should walk away. But according to journalist Fabrizio Romano, the Reds have done the exact opposite.
“What I want to tell you today is that Liverpool are still monitoring Martin Zubimendi on a constant basis,” Romano told his YouTube channel on Wednesday evening.
“It’s also true that there are two managers who are big fans of Zubimendi, apart from we know Liverpool and Arne Slot, what they already did last summer and they remain interested and keep monitoring the player. Mikel Arteta also appreciates Zubimendi and also Xabi Alonso.
“I can tell you that in case Xabi Alonso was going to be the Bayern Munich coach – something they discussed in February and March – one of the signings he wanted at Bayern was Martin Zubimendi,” adds the transfer expert.
“So, remember the appreciation of Mikel Arteta and Xabi Alonso for Martin Zubimendi, who could be an interesting name to watch in 2025 because Liverpool are still monitoring him and also these two managers keep watching the quality, the excellent work of Zubimendi.
“Now Real Sociedad are losing a key piece in the director Roberto Olabe, so in 2025, summer probably, the situation around Zubimendi could change.”
Liverpool should make certain with Martin Zubimendi
In our opinion, the fact that Liverpool are still interested at all in Zubimendi suggests that a transfer could happen.
The Euro 2024 winner and his agent clearly spoke at length with the Reds about a transfer over the summer.

Obviously, after he decided to stay at Real Sociedad, Liverpool would walk away if they felt that the door had been closed.
That the links have continued would strongly suggest that that is not the case, though.
Slot quite blatantly felt that Zubimendi – who has a £51m release clause – was the man to take Liverpool’s midfield up a notch. If they now feel that there is a chance to secure him after all, they absolutely should take it.
