George Russell responds to Mercedes signing Verstappen mid-season

George Russell has broken his silence on the swirling rumors about Mercedes potentially signing Max Verstappen during the ongoing F1 season, as the Dutchman’s uncertain future at Red Bull once again dominates headlines.

Verstappen’s uncharacteristically rough start to the 2025 campaign has reignited speculation, especially after Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff previously made no secret of his desire to bring the four-time world champion to Brackley. Although Wolff recently signed rising star Kimi Antonelli, some insiders believe Mercedes hasn’t entirely closed the door on Verstappen—particularly if his situation at Red Bull continues to deteriorate.

Russell, who is currently enjoying one of his strongest starts to a season with three podiums in the first four races, was asked directly about the Verstappen speculation—and he didn’t hold back.

“I’ve got zero concerns,” Russell told reporters ahead of the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. “I believe in myself. I know what I bring to the team, and I’ve shown that this year. If Max comes to Mercedes, I’ll welcome the challenge. But I’m not looking over my shoulder—I’m looking forward.”

The 27-year-old Brit, whose contract is set to expire at the end of the season, emphasized that his recent performances should speak for themselves.

“You don’t get on the podium three times in four races without doing something right,” he continued. “We’ve been up there with the McLarens, we’re pushing every weekend, and I’m proud of the consistency. I’ve matured as a driver, and I know I can go wheel-to-wheel with anyone on the grid—Max included.”

Russell made it clear that he respects Verstappen’s accomplishments but sees no reason to fear competing directly with him in the same machinery.

“Max is a phenomenal talent—no one questions that. But I’ve raced him, I’ve beaten him on track, and I know what I’m capable of,” Russell said. “If we end up as teammates, it won’t change a thing for me. I’ll approach it like I always do: head down, deliver results, and fight for the top.”

Despite Mercedes’ improved performance and Russell sitting just 14 points behind championship leader Lando Norris, the Brit remains cautious about declaring a full title push.

“We’re still not the absolute fastest car, let’s be honest. But we’re making huge progress. If we keep this up, anything’s possible in the second half of the season. I just want to be in a position where, one day, I’m the one lifting that trophy.”

Whether Verstappen joins Mercedes this season remains to be seen, but one thing is certain—George Russell is more than ready for the challenge.
