Donald Trump’s hopes of hosting The Open Championship at Turnberry remain up in the air, but the former President has had more success with other courses and events

U.S. President Donald Trump has secured another sporting triumph as both the PGA Tour and LIV Golf are scheduled to visit his courses in 2026.
Trump’s ambitions to host The Open Championship at his Turnberry Golf Course remain uncertain after R&A chief executive Mark Darbon highlighted logistical challenges. Turnberry hasn’t welcomed The Open since 2009 and was targeted by pro-Palestine protesters in March.
The R&A pointed out that Turnberry accommodated around 120,000 spectators in 2009, while Portrush welcomed nearly 280,000 this year. This could prove to be too significant an obstacle for Trump to clear, but he has achieved greater success with other venues and different tournaments.
For the first time since the emergence of the Saudi-backed circuit created a rift in golf, LIV Golf and the PGA Tour will visit Trump-owned courses during the same season. The two premier golf tours are scheduled to return to Trump properties in 2026.
On Wednesday, LIV Golf revealed it’s coming back to Trump National Golf Club Washington D.C., in Sterling, Va., next May as part of an eight-tournament 2026 calendar.
The venue last welcomed a LIV tournament in 2023, and LIV Golf has competed at a Trump-owned facility every year since launching in 2022.
“I am thrilled to welcome LIV Golf back to Trump National Golf Club Washington, D.C.,” Eric Trump, EVP of the Trump Organization, said in the announcement.

“When we last hosted at Trump D.C, we set all-time attendance records – and this year will be even bigger.
“I look forward to showcasing one of the nation’s most iconic golf venues and welcoming back many of the world’s greatest golfers.”
But it’s not just the players getting in on the Trump action – the PGA Tour is too.
Word on the green is that the PGA Tour is planning a comeback to Trump National Doral Golf Course in Miami, timing it just before the LIV Golf event. It’s been a minute since the PGA Tour hit up Doral – the last time was for the 2016 WGC-Cadillac Championship.
With the PGA and LIV lining up their shots, the only thing left for a Trump course grand slam is The Open swinging back to Turnberry. Trump snagged the legendary links in 2014 for a cool $60 million, with The Open’s last tee-off there in 2009.
Looking ahead, Royal Birkdale’s got The Open in 2026, followed by St. Andrew’s in 2027, which tees up 2028 as the next open slot for the major to make a comeback at Turnberry – coincidentally, the last year Trump could be in office.
The last two big events at Turnberry were the 2012 Senior British Open and the 2015 Women’s British Open.
