Even the most dominant champions have their quirks, and according to Gianpiero Lambiase — the man who’s been in Max Verstappen’s ear for years — the Dutch driver’s greatest limitation is also one of his defining traits: his stub𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐧ness.
Speaking candidly, Lambiase revealed that Verstappen’s fierce determination to stick to his instincts can sometimes clash with team strategy. “Max knows exactly what he wants, and he’ll fight for it, even if the data says otherwise,” the race engineer explained. “It’s part of what makes him so good, but it can also be his biggest challenge.”
The Red Bull pair have built one of the most successful driver–engineer relationships in modern Formula 1, known for their sharp, sometimes fiery, radio exchanges. Lambiase insists the stub𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐧 streak isn’t a flaw so much as a double-edged sword. “He has the conviction to make bold calls in the heat of battle. Nine times out of ten, he’s right — but the tenth time can hurt.”
Verstappen’s confidence in his own judgement has paid off in countless victories and three world championships. But Lambiase hinted that as the competition tightens, flexibility could be the key to maintaining dominance. “The sport evolves.
