“My Wife Burst Out Laughing When She Saw It” – Ryan Gravenberch Reveals the Unforgettable Gift Virgil van Dijk Brought for His New𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐧

Ryan Gravenberch had already been living a whirlwind of emotions. At just 23, the Liverpool midfielder welcomed his first 𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥 into the world last week. Between sleepless nights, nervous diaper changes, and moments of pure wonder at holding his 𝑏𝑎𝑏𝑦 in his arms, he thought he had experienced it all. That was, until the doorbell rang on a quiet afternoon in Merseyside.

Standing at the door was none other than Liverpool’s captain, Virgil van Dijk.

“I was honestly shocked,” Gravenberch recalled in a conversation with local media. “I knew Virgil was supportive, but I didn’t expect him to come to my home personally. He’s the captain, he has his own family, his own responsibilities, but he showed up—smiling as always.”

Van Dijk had come to congratulate his younger teammate on becoming a father. What nobody expected, however, was the gift he was carrying under his arm. Wrapped in Liverpool-red paper with a golden ribbon, the package was unusually large, and heavy enough that Van Dijk had to shift it from one arm to the other as he stepped into the house.

“My wife burst out laughing when she saw it,” Gravenberch said, grinning at the memory. “It wasn’t the usual flowers or 𝑏𝑎𝑏𝑦 clothes. When we opened it, we couldn’t believe what was inside.”

Inside the package was a tiny, custom-made 𝑏𝑎𝑏𝑦-sized Liverpool kit—complete with the captain’s armband stitched on the sleeve. The number four, Van Dijk’s famous shirt number, was printed proudly across the back, but instead of “Van Dijk,” it had the 𝑏𝑎𝑏𝑦’s surname: Gravenberch.

“It was unbelievable,” Gravenberch said, shaking his head in disbelief. “Virgil had actually gone to the trouble of asking the kit team to make it. A 𝑏𝑎𝑏𝑦 kit with a captain’s armband—it’s one of the most unique gifts I’ve ever seen. My wife just laughed so much because the armband nearly covered half the shirt. It was adorable and hilarious at the same time.”

But the surprises didn’t end there.

Tucked inside the kit’s tiny pocket was a handwritten note from Van Dijk. In his elegant, careful handwriting, the Dutch defender had penned a message: “To the future captain. May you always wear your name with pride. With love, Uncle Virgil.”

For Ryan and his wife, the gesture struck a deeper chord.

“You don’t expect your captain to go that far,” Gravenberch said emotionally. “It wasn’t just a gift—it was symbolic. He was telling us that family comes first, that we’re all connected in this journey, not only as players but as people.”

Van Dijk, known for his commanding presence on the pitch, has often been described by teammates as equally calm, wise, and nurturing off it. His visit to the Gravenberch household only reinforced that reputation.

“Virgil stayed for an hour,” Ryan continued. “He held the 𝑏𝑎𝑏𝑦, told us stories about when he first became a father, and gave me advice. He told me, ‘Football is important, but nothing compares to family. You’ll see—every goal you score, every match you play, will feel different now.’ It hit me hard, because he’s right. My perspective has already changed.”

The moment has quickly become one of Gravenberch’s most cherished memories, not only because of the thoughtful gift but also because of what it meant.

“Becoming a father is huge,” he said. “Sometimes you feel a bit lost—like, am I ready for this? Can I balance football and family? But when someone like Virgil shows up at your door and tells you that you’re going to be okay, that you’ll figure it out—it gives you strength.”

Liverpool fans, upon hearing about the story, flooded social media with messages of warmth and humor. Memes of a 𝑏𝑎𝑏𝑦 Gravenberch captaining Liverpool at Anfield in 2045 quickly spread across Twitter, while others joked that Jurgen Klopp might already be scouting the new𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐧 for midfield duty.

For Gravenberch, though, the moment remains deeply personal.

“The laughter, the surprise, the feeling of being cared for—it’s something I’ll never forget,” he concluded. “That tiny kit will be framed and kept forever. One day, when my 𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥 is old enough, I’ll show it to them and say, ‘Look, this was your first gift—from one of the greatest captains in football.’”

As for Van Dijk, the captain didn’t leave without one final quip. According to Ryan’s wife, as Virgil was putting his shoes back on at the door, he smiled and said: “Remember, Ryan—if he learns to dribble before he can walk, I expect you to sign him up straight away.”
