A Los Angeles judge formally granted joint physical and legal custody of Emani Asghedom, the 17-year-old daughter of the late rapper Nipsey Hussle, to her mother Tanisha Foster, according to court documents filed March 5th, 2025. The ruling ends a years-long guardianship battle that began after Hussle’s murder in 2019. The agreement gives Foster 60% of custody time, while Nipsey’s brother, Sam Asghedom, holds custody for the remaining time and serves as the sole family-side guardian. Under the terms, Nipsey’s mother, Angelique, and sister, Samantha, stepped back from their previous co-guardian roles.

Both Foster and Sam Asghedom now hold equal decision-making authority over Emani’s welfare, and the agreement includes specific language affirming Foster’s full parental rights. Provisions also require Emani’s academic life and extracurricular schedules,to remain stable across both households. The resolution marks a major structural shift from the arrangement first put in place after Hussle’s death. When Hussle was fatally shot outside his Marathon Clothing store on March 31st, 2019, Emani was just 10 years old.
In the weeks after his death, his family sought legal guardianship of her, raising concerns about Tanisha Foster’s history of substance abuse and alleged troubling situations involving children. Foster voluntarily agreed to the arrangement at first, saying she acknowledged her financial limitations and wanted Emani to remain connected to the world Hussle had built around her. She later returned to court alleging her access to her own daughter had been systematically cut off. Her words to the court were recorded as dire, with Foster stating Emani routinely asked when they would live together again and begging for the guardianship to end.
Caught between a grieving family and a mother fighting for custody, Emani spent much of her teenage years navigating a high-profile and deeply personal legal dispute. She was present at an early custody hearing in May 2019, and TMZ reported she became emotionally distressed upon seeing her mother in the courtroom. The final 2025 ruling represents a rare clean conclusion for a family dispute involving generational wealth, public pressure, and competing interests. Legal adulthood for Emani, who turns 18 in November 2025, appears to have made her own voice a significant factor in the resolution.
The custody case was not the only legal matter surrounding Hussle’s estate. In November 2023, Sam Asghedom filed a full accounting report valuing Nipsey Hussle’s estate at approximately $11 million. About $7 million of that is held in liquid funds, while the remaining $4 million is tied up in business interests, including 100% membership in All Money Inc. , Marathon Studios, Marathon Touring Company, Marathon Clothing, and Hussle’s entire trademark portfolio.
Emani and her younger brother, Kross Asghedom, are listed as the sole beneficiaries, each holding a 50% stake. Since Kross is a minor, his share is managed by his mother, actress Lauren London. The Marathon Clothing store remains active on Slauson Avenue, with Sam confirming plans for an additional location anda fast food concept on the same block. He has also teased the potential release of unreleased Nipsey Hussle material, stating any music would only be released if Hussle personally had a hand in shaping it.
Lauren London has continued to promote Hussle’s legacy publicly and financially. In 2024, she partnered with Microsoft, Earn Your Leisure, and Marathon Clothing to launch the Nipsey Hussle 100K Pitch Competition, a grant initiative providing $100,000 to Black entrepreneurs. The legal and financial resolutions, however, have not erased the deeper community concerns about Emani’s daily environment. Observers point out that Emani navigates the same Crenshaw neighborhood where her father’s face is painted on murals, and the same street culture that shaped him before his death remains active.
Some in the community quietly question whether the same intentional effort applied to managing Hussle’s business empire is being applied to guiding his daughter through her personal life. They cite the need for consistent mentorship and protection, not just financial management, as Emani carries one of the most recognized names in hip-hop, a name that ensures she cannot move through her neighborhood anonymously. Emani, who was born November 9th, 2008, continues to live in Los Angeles, splitting her time between her mother’s home and her uncle’s household under the new custody agreement. A clip she posted in November 2024 drew widespread attention across the hip-hop community for her striking resemblance to her father.
She remains a central and emotionally charged figure in the story of Hussle’s legacy, poised to inherit a multi-million dollar fortune as she approaches adulthood. The culture that loved Nipsey Hussle, and the people who keep his memory alive, now wait to see how Emani builds her own path. As those close to him acknowledge, the real marathon, the one defined by people rather than brands, does not end.
Right now, it runs through her.
