Kai Havertz completed a £65million move to Arsenal from Chelsea during the summer transfer window but he has struggled to settle in at the Emirates Stadium so far
Arsenal star Kai Havertz has sent a message to Mikel Arteta during the international break – but Chelsea fans will find it quite strange. The Germany international swapped Stamford Bridge for the Emirates Stadium this summer after completing a £65million transfer to join the Gunners.
“He needs these kinds of things to happen for him,” Wright told Premier League Productions after Havertz missed a glorious chance to score in the 3-1 win against Manchester United before the international break. “He has obviously taken his eye off the ball – I am thinking ‘this is what he needs (a goal)’.
“He needs to settle himself down. There is a lot of talk about him. It’s a great touch. A great touch! But he has just slashed his foot at it. Instead of just watching it. Anything on target and you score.
“I think, at the moment, that’s how it’s going for him. It came off Anthony Martial’s hand to get to him, so I can’t complain about that.
“At the same time, it’s the kind of chance you hope he takes so he can start to get himself going at Arsenal – I haven’t seen that for a long time. The Arsenal fans are still waiting for it to happen for him.”
Speaking in a press conference ahead of Germany’s friendly fixture against Japan, Havertz admitted that he enjoys playing as a striker despite being played in a No.8 role under Arteta. “I’ve said often enough that the striker position isn’t a bad thing for me,” Havertz told the media.
“I played as the nine at Chelsea for what felt like a year and a half and was very successful. I try to play the position in the best possible way and be successful.”
Chelsea fans may question the ‘success’ Havertz had as a striker during his time at Stamford Bridge after he came under heavy criticism for his performances in attack. The German forward will be hoping to pay back his £65million fee with some goals and assists after the international break, but it’s clear Arteta has faith in him after defending him to the press following the win against United.
The Spaniard said: “I’ve said to Havertz: things are hard at the beginning. When I met my wife, at the beginning it was hard to conquer her. It was hard, I had to try and message her, and go, and go. At the end, when she says ‘yes, we can be together’. It’s beautiful.”
