Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton React Strongly to Major F1 Rule Changes

Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton have expressed their dissatisfaction with the proposed regulation changes set to take effect in the 2026 Formula 1 season. The new rules aim to address various aspects of the sport, including aerodynamics, power units, weight, and sustainability, with the goal of increasing competition and ending periods of dominance by teams such as Mercedes and Red Bull.

Verstappen, the current championship leader, voiced his concerns about the changes and their potential impact on the sport. “I haven’t driven it more, but there are still so many things that need to be fine-tuned anyway to get a good picture and everything,” Verstappen said in an interview with Motorsport Week. “And I said it before, I’m in the middle at the moment where we can give a lot of criticism at the moment but maybe when you drive it you’re like it’s actually not too bad, it’s quite fun.”

However, Verstappen emphasized that he would have approached the regulations differently if he had the authority. “Naturally, when I look at the regulations, it’s not how I would have written them. I also understand, of course, how the world is changing and we wanted to attract more manufacturers as well to get in. So if that is the way to go then I guess that’s where we have to head.”

Lewis Hamilton, a seven-time world champion, echoed similar sentiments regarding the upcoming changes. “We always want to see improvements in the sport, but it’s crucial that these changes don’t take away from the essence of racing,” Hamilton said during a press conference. “I’m all for sustainability and bringing in more competition, but it’s important that the regulations are clear and fair for everyone.”

Hamilton also highlighted the need for thorough testing and feedback from drivers to ensure the new rules enhance the sport rather than complicate it. “We need to make sure that the drivers’ input is considered because we’re the ones out there on the track. The goal should be to improve the racing experience for both the drivers and the fans.”

As both Verstappen and Hamilton prepare for the upcoming Hungarian Grand Prix, the debate over the 2026 regulations continues to stir discussions within the F1 community. Verstappen will be looking to reclaim victory after being denied by Hamilton and Mercedes at Silverstone, while Hamilton aims to close the gap in the championship standings.
